Pros:Good for any skill level
Cons:No high speed lifts

Alta Ski Resort is a convenient 35-45 minute drive from downtown Salt Lake City and has the absolute best facilities for a skier in the state of Utah.
Personally, I have been snowboarding before, but I had never skied before in my life before last weekend...Jan. 4-7th. Within three days of 2 hour lessons, both class and private, I was able to go down Blue Runs confidently that began at an elevation of approx. 10,600 ft. ascending to a base of about 8,500 ft. I believe Alta is one of the few ski resorts left that doesn't allow snowboarders, which made my virgin skiing experience even better. Furthermore, Alta is laid out so that all the beginner runs are at one end and the more expert runs are on another end.
It's also a great resort for families. If you and your husband have been skiing all your life, but you have a child who doesn't know how to ski or is even old enough to ski...Alta has child care facilities and "Children's Ski Adventures."
Moreover, the price is right here with a $35 all area, all day lift ticket and beginner all day lift tickets for $25. Come on, you can't beat that! There are also many different types of restaurant both at the base and on the mountain. If you are more advanced there is the Collin's grill, which has to restaurants...a sit down or cafeteria style restaurant. Then on the other end of the resort there's Alf's...a cafeteria style restaurant.
Now if you believe this resort sounds good, but you don't want to pay the price of staying at the actual resort...there are shuttles that bring you up the hill from Downtown Salt Lake. Also, Utah's public bus...UTA...also runs up there for only $1.75 one way. So getting there is no excuse.
Alta is also a 5-10 minute drive past Snowbyrd, another ski resort, in the canyon, so if you are staying at Alta you don't have to just ski there. There are also shuttles from Alta that will take you to the famous Park City...the location of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
The scenery is great, the air is clean, so if you have never skied before, I'd advise you start you skiing career here at Alta.
