BRIGHTON
Usually when little Cottonwood canyon is still closed for avalanche danger, Big Cottonwood canyon has already been opened. Zip up to Brighton and avoid the big tourist sinkholes next door. You get the same powder for a smaller price, without the huge line clusters, and access to untracked long after the last storm.
Brighton is an 850-ache snowboard park; with lots of half pipes, cliffs, rocks, trees, cornices, and bonk-able whoop-t-doos. Skiers like Brighton too, but you feel like a tall naked kid at a high school dance.
Downside: All those young boarders change the game considerably. Most skiers jump ship to keep their sanity.
Adventure potential: Every adventure skier I know has spent time hiking out of bounds from Brighton, finding some of the best untracked powder of their lives. One of many options is to hike from the top of Brighton's Millicent lift to the peak just 25-minutes away. From there, another half hour south along the ridge gives you Wolverine Cirque, which is also accessible from Alta.
