The front four at the underrated Stowe Mountain resort offers some of the best skiing/riding on the East coast. Mount Mansfield is Vermont's highest peak, measuring in at just under 4,400 feet. After paying $100.00 for a two day lift ticket, high speed quad, triple, and double chairs quickly transport you to the start of the longest average trail distance in the East, fully utilizing the 22 feet of annual snow fall. However, if it is West coast conditions you have adapted to, it is feasible you find more fake snow, ice or even rain than you are comfortable with, because snowmaking coverage is at roughly 75%. Having said that, no resort in the world can offer what Stowe has to offer, on a good day.
Stowe offers all levels of terrain, divided into two locations, spruce where the bunny trails and tow rope are located and the main mountain, where the very demanding front four can be battled. Beginner trails comprise 15% of the total trails, followed by 60% intermediate trails and 25% are Expert trails. Stowe resort also offers everything from daycare to hot meals and hot tea.
A large scope of restaurants exist, from Pie in the Sky to Swisspot. The main strip of bars is scattered from the resort to the village, meaning bar hopping requires a designated driver. The Rustynail and Matterhorn offer good bands and drinks. The Shed, Topnotch resort and Gracies are excellent apre-ski and dinner locations, while Cactus Cafe and Meigals offer Southwestern/Mexican food to heat up with. Excellent breakfast can be found at Mccarthys.
You have it all, eat good food and burn off the extra caloric intake on the slopes. Stowe offers a unique charm, nice people and Vermont charm. The winter carnival is one of the best time to visit, (Jan. 26-31)with increased activities and the best chance of good conditions.
Stowe is also known for summer and fall gratification. Golf, the Vermont Mozart Festival, mountain biking, hiking, spas and their high-quality massage therapy, and gondola rides through breathtaking fall colors attract many to the winter town, that even rhymes with snow.
If you can arrange a vacation to this beautiful ski town, I would highly recommend it. Vermont has an unique charm that can only be experienced by visiting. Burlington International Airport is 40 minutes away, while driving from New York takes 5 hours.
