| CARNEYVA's Full Review: Stowe |
As a Vermonter who loves to ski, I must say that Stowe is a skiing legend, being one of the oldest (if not THE oldest) ski resort in America. It is quaint, beautiful, and easily accessible. The surrounding area boasts terrific restaurants (and a wide selection), comfortable lodging, and an alpine aura not to be found anywhere else in the east. The mountain's terrain, though small by western standards, is varied and worthwhile, in that there's plenty for all levels of ability. For all of these reasons I recommend it. However, quaintness frequently has a downside, and in this case it is the antiquated lift system. Stowe has NO mid-mountain lifts, which means that all skier traffic is funneled right back to the base lifts, which can be mobbed on weekends, resulting in more time spent standing in long lift lines than on the mountain. Stowe can also be ferociously cold and windy, as most of the mountain is in the shadows after twelve noon, but this just means that the gondola becomes the way to go. Finally, understand that Stowe almost never offers discounts - unlike neighbors Sugarbush, Smuggler's Notch, and Jay Peak - which can make it an expensive proposition. All in all, an eastern skiing tradition that is recommended, albeit with some reservations.
