| KMINER's Full Review: Stowe |
I know, some avid skiers are going to think me nuts, but if you knew just how unathletic I am, you would realize you DEFINATELY do NOT want me on the slopes! But I love Vermont with a passion, and in particular Stowe, VT, best known for its skiing. If you want to see "typical" New England, then this is the PLACE to go!
My then boyfriend, now husband took me from our little town in upstate NY by car to "a special weekend". Well, Stowe offers a Fall Leaf Festival, and spectucular views each season, so the first weekend in October off we went!
The drive was not bad, though windy and very country once we got nearer to Stowe. There are MANY bed and breakfast's in and around Stowe. The one we stayed in was about $60 a night off season. ( I remember it was way more during ski season, but not the exact price). Our room was so darling with the antique quilts and furniture. We stayed at the bottom of the main road (hill) leading up to the ski resort, so we could easily walk to "town". The first night I donned my wool sweater, headed towards the covered walkway over the bridge, and was son my way. All the stores were closed, but they had some of the most beautiful handmade quilts I had seen. We stopped in somewhere close and warm for a quick bite to eat, the prices were reasonable.
The next morning, we slowly made our way, by car, up the mountain. Not only can you see the beautiful leaves changes with brilliant colors, you can pull into all these neat shops and plazas to shop (and I mean, cute, not the commercial plazas you see like strip malls). We ate bagels, bought t-shirts from Peace Frog, and scoped out Christmas ornaments.
At the ski resort you can either hike the mountain (yeah right) or ride a gondola to the top (my choice). The view was beautiful and at the top, while chilly, you could grab some hot cocoa, eat lunch if you wanted, and take all the pictures you could imagine while walking outside.
After eating a wonderful, nicely priced lobster dinner, we went to a movie. It was the first time I had been to a theater that not only served alcohol if you chose, but also Ben & Jerry's ice cream on a stick!
The next day we went to the nearby Ben & Jerry's factory, and took the "official tour" ate, took pictures, and bought cheesy merchandise.
It was a blast.
