| steve.wheelock's Full Review: Cats |
When it first premiered on Broadway it may have been original and clever. I sat through it in 1991 and am totally amazed that such caterwalling still survives in the razzle dazzle cutthroat atmosphere of NY's Broadway. It was almost unendurable, if I want dissonance I'll listen to Stravinsky, Schoenberg or Webern; if I want to hear cats fighting and screaming all I have to do is go by the animal shelter. Compared to such gems as "A Chorus Line," "Miss Saigon," or "Phantom of the Opera" this is hard to sit through. The sainted grandmother praised in another more generous review is exactly that in my book a saint for her patience for putting up with what I'd put in the litter box.
