| cusnwalter's Full Review: Radio City Christmas Spectacular |
The 75th anniversary of the most spectacular show this holiday season, has "filled my heart with Christmas." As a local cynical New Yorker, obviously I went to the show not really expected that much. Yah, I figured that there would be the annoying kid behind me, jolly old St. nick flying in the sky, and cheesy, way too early, Christmas sprit all rolled into an anti-climatic two hours. Well was I mistaken!
The 2008 version of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is one of the best shows you can see this holiday season. The city really becomes magical during the holiday season and this show is almost like a magical gift. Of course the headline of the show is really the Rockettes. They appear in all of their glory with high leg kicking fun. Whether you come for the Christmas spirit or to see the Rockettes, you will not be disappointed. Without giving too many of the secrets away my favorite scene was when the Rockettes got on a NYC sight seeing bus and actually drove around NYC, it was cool!
This year there are few fun surprises and new scenes. The show begins with Santa's reindeer, the Rockettes, and Santa having to get to Radio City to begin the show. Briefly, the audience adorns 3D glasses and a short 3 minute 3-D animation shows Santa flying through the city and awakening the Christmas spirit until he finally reaches the doors of Radio City. The lights go up and Santa makes his appearance down the aisle and up on stage to really beginning the show! Through out the show, Santa acts as a ringleader introducing or prompting the next scene. The following is a list of the scenes and descriptions. Two organ players play as you walk in and entertain while you wait for the show to begin.
Overture
Scene 1 Sleigh ride: The Rockettes, dressed as reindeer, get ready to help Santa this holiday season.
Scene 2 Santa Flies to New York: 3-D animation allows you to fly with Santa on his trip to Radio City and New York. Pretty cool animation!
Scene 3 The Twelve Days of Christmas: The Rockettes do an interpretive tap dance to the famous song.
Scene 4 The Nutcracker: Don't think I need to explain this one. This scene has been around for a long time and uses teddy bears as the toys.
Scene 5 The Parade of Wooden Soldiers: Santa's favorite toy! This is another long running favorite. The Rockettes signature dance scene, besides the high kicking legs! Loved it!
Scene 6 New York At Christmas: The Rockettes hop onto a sightseeing bus and visit famous sights around the city. The projection and technical aspect of this scene is superb!
Scene 7 Here Comes Santa Claus: Santa tries to convince a young boy that he is really magical.
Scene 8 The Magic Is There: Santa helps two young boys to find the perfect gift or the gifts find them in his workshop.
Scene 9 Christmas Memories: This is a weird scene about Christmas a long time ago. You are shown a historic video about the history of the Rockettes and Radio city. Seemed like a time waster between acts to me.
Scene 10 Let Christmas Shine: Rockettes and the entire company do a great dance number about the message of Christmas.
Scene 11 The Living Nativity: Uses real animals, pretty cool.
Scene 12 Joy to the World: Precursor to the Curtain call. The singers try to get the audience to sing along to Joy to the World. Was cute but didn't really work during my performance.
Information about Tickets: I highly recommend you purchase tickets prior to the day or week that you plan to go. This show is very popular, especially when you get closer to Christmas. You may get tickets online or in person at the box office at Radio City. Tickets can be expensive; they can range from $42 - $90. There are discount tickets and promotions available, look around on the Internet for promo codes. If you order and select will call for pick up, arrive at least 30 minutes early and enter through the front main entrance to receive your tickets. If you printed at home or already have your tickets in hand, you may enter/line up on 50th or 51st street.
Food and Souvenirs: Drinks and snacks are available for purchase once you are inside. Popcorn, cotton candy, candy, and pretzels are all available but expect prices $4 and up. Soda was $5 for a bottle, as was water. Alcohol drinks are also available. If you want souvenirs, oh boy do they have them, and more. T-shirts, programs, light up toys, stuffed animals, CD's they are all available for purchase inside and outside in the Radio City holiday store. Beware these cost a lot! A light up spin toy with a globe that just lights up and spun cost $20!
The show runs a little under 2 hours with no intermission. Loud music, strobe lights, and pyrotechnics are used. Handicap seating is available.
Overall, I really enjoyed this show! It really filled my heart and soul with the holiday spirit. Each scene offered something for everyone young or old. From new scenes to old stand bys, it gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling. You will leave the show with a huge smile on your face! It is well worth the ticket price!
