| lomtevas's Full Review: Radio City Christmas Spectacular |
The 2008 version of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular was very lean with lots of skin.
I never remember seeing so many Rockettes numbers where they are barely clothed. This year was very revealing.
I also never saw a nativity scene that was so brief. All the other numbers lingered on for a while - especially the Grayline Bus number - but the Magi really cut to the chase this year. Gone was the Scrooge scene and the scene where the orchestra moved around on stage.
For two organ pieces, the two Wurlitzer players sat at their organs and didn't hit any keys, yet the thunderous music shook the theater. There was a thunderous tympani playing throughout the show but the percussion section of the orchestra never hit any tympani (which stood in the right corner of the orchestra forlorn). The violinists also seemed detached from their music.
The Nutcracker number also seemed a bit different than before. Tchaikovsky wrote the story about the little girl who fell asleep and dreamed about the various toys under the Christmas tree. The wooden soldiers were supposed to be part of that dream where they are mobilized against rats. In the Christmas Spectacular, the little girl and dancing bear scene has another number taking place before the wooden soldiers appear for the domino fall. So Tchaikovsky got cut in two.
In the midst of all this brevity, there was a scene where 1980's news reports showed that Radio City was closing. If the show got any briefer, there would be nothing to show.
Overall, I don't remember the spectacular being done as quickly as before. It seemed to be finished about one hour after it started. That was a quick presentation!
Watch the $10 bags of cotton candy and the $100 tickets.
