An Absolutely Exhilarating Experience!
Written: Jan 18 '01 (Updated Jan 18 '01)
Pros:a 5 star visual and auditory experience that will leave you breathless
Cons:a bit shorter than I expected, only 1 hour 45 mins
The Bottom Line: Go see this show, PERIOD!!! It's perfect for the whole family, it's fast paced, and in no uncertain terms, it ROCKS!
I had first heard of Blue Man Group about 5 years ago, when advertisements began running that promoted the opening of the Boston segment of Blue Man Group. I thought to myself "Wow, that looks pretty cool, I should check that out." Unfortunately, it took me 5 years to do so, but then again, when you're 15, 16, 17 and on, you don't exactly have $50 or so to go to events like these.
However, earlier this month (the 10th to be exact), I finally went into Boston to the Charles Playhouse and watched the show I had heard so much about. And my words as I walked out of the theatre after the approximately one hour forty five minute show were "that was by far the coolest f*cking thing I have ever seen in my life."
For those who don't know what Blue Man Group is, it is nearly impossible to actually describe with any sort of accuracy. It is at once music, theatre, art and an improvisational comedy performance performed by 3 men (with backing band) in blue make up and dark color body suits. Die-hard fans say that no show is exactly the same, and the one thing I can tell you is that this is probably because of the audience participation segments. As a member of the audience, you are a part of the show, make no mistake. However, there are 2 or 3 lucky audience members who actually get on stage with the Blue Men, and the shows differ most likely in how those audience members react to the situations they are presented with. Right before the show starts, the audience as a whole takes part in saying hello to various members of the audience via a message board on either side of the stage. At my show, there was a birthday person in the house (thank god I went the night AFTER my birthday) and the entire audience sang happy birthday to her.
The music that is performed is one sort of drumming or percussion or another. Yes, there is a backing band (consisting of a drummer, guitarist and organ/keyboard player), but they, for the most part, are the backing music, and play second fiddle to what the 3 Blue Men are doing on stage.
I've been to other Broadway style productions, namely Tommy and Stomp, but yet, Blue Man Group is my favorite show by far. It will make you hold your sides in heavy laughter one minute, and be awe stricken by the music the guys are making onstage the next. It is truly a remarkable experience, one that should not be missed by anyone of any age.
A warning to parents: there are two uses of naughty words (and yes, the f word is used once, but it might go over the young ones heads in the context it is used, "mindf*ck").
Blue Man Group currently runs in New York, Boston, Chicago, and Las Vegas. I urge everyone in those areas to check it out, and I urge anyone visiting those areas to check it out as well. It may just be the coolest $50 you'll ever spend.
