I found the new release of Saturday Night by Steven Sondheim a big disapointment.
I must say I am used to the more polished and refined wit and musical agility of more recent Sondheim pieces. This musical is a revival of a work he first started over 40 yrs ago and the musical quality shows. It is very flat and does not include the layered dimension that I expect from a Sondheim show. The plot and lyrics are reminiscent of many other shows from years gone by. I also found the music with a single simple tone where as the more refined Sondheim of today give us deliciously complex and multi layered music and lyrics. I understand that this was one of his first unproduced commercial ventures, but in today's market this pales by comparison.
Don't waste your time or money, wait for a revival of Sweeney Todd or Into the Woods Instead.
If you want to see Sondheim at the top of his form, AVOID this show!
