| scottcolson's Full Review: The Vagina Monologues |
My wife and I recently saw the Vagina Monologues. We had no idea what to expect before we got there, but the title intrigued us. Prior to seeing it, all we knew about the Vagina Monologues was that Rudy Guiliani's ex-wife had starred in it. We didn't know anything else.
I hope to give you the advantage of knowing a few things about this show before you see it, and I also hope to convince you to see it!
The Vagina Monologues is a play that was written by Eve Ensler. Ms. Ensler composed these monologues after interviewing over 200 women and asking them about their vaginas. She interviewed women without regard to race, age, or socioeconomic status. She interviewed young girls, elderly women, and many ages in between. She interviewed homeless women and women who were wealthy. These interviews are the basis of the monologues.
The stage is very simple. Three women sit in three chairs with microphones and they recite the monologues. They give you much of the background of the monologues and then they proceed.
Most of the monologues are very funny. One of the earliest monologues discussed the yearly Pap smear and the dreaded speculum exam. This was especially interesting to me since I'm a physician and my wife is a nurse. The monologue went on to complain about the cold specula and many other complaints. It was funny!
They go through many names that women use for the vagina. I won't go through them for you here, because I don't want to ruin it, but there were many names I had never heard of!
There was one monologue I did not care for, but it was very important and a great learning experience. This monologue was a discussion of a poor woman in Bosnia who was repeatedly raped by soldiers and has now escaped to the U.S.
One of the things that impressed me about the show was the variety of people in the audience. There were young couples like my wife and I, older married couples, groups of friends, and quite a few lesbian couples. I think it was a great "slice of society." People of all walks of life seemed drawn to it.
There were many other monologues, but I really don't want to ruin it for people who read this. Overall, I highly recommend this show for anyone to see. Of course, it wouldn't be appropriate for young children, or anyone who would be offended by this material. To paraphrase the advertising, if you are a woman, married to a woman, have ever dated a woman, have a sister or a mother, you should see this show! That covers almost everyone!
I know this is different from my medical epinions, but
hopefully it will help someone who is considering seeing this show. I think everyone should see it.
