| lwg76's Full Review: Tony N' Tina's Wedding |
I had a lot of fun at Tony N Tina's Wedding. Since I've only been to about two weddings in my life, one which occurred when I was 4, I got a kick out of attending a "virtual" wedding. If you go to weddings all the time maybe you won't feel the need to pay money to get invited to one, although this big, cheesy italian wedding may be the type of wedding that you wouldn't be able to attend. This show is fun just because it gives you an experience you might not have otherwise. However, don't expect a lot of plot or action beyond what happens at most weddings. I think the point of Tony n Tina's Wedding is to create an overall experience rather than to provide a gripping plot that progresses throughout the evening - because there isn't really one.
You start off at St. Luke's Church, or at least in the basement of the church, where you will watch the wedding ceremony. The cast members, including Tony and Tina and their friends and family, are of course at the wedding as well. Interacting with the cast was a lot of fun, and they do walk around and talk to everybody. There are some funny parts, like when you learn a hymn that Tina's cousin, a nun, wrote for the occasion, but there seems to be no real tune so you just make it up. Now during the ceremony I expected a big plot to unravel. While certainly there were interesting things going on, and some potential sources of conflict, none of them really went anywhere. Part way through the ceremony some guy comes in late. On my way out of the church the grandmother pulled me aside to tell me that she couldn't believe that Tina's ex-boyfriend had gotten out of rehab and showed up at the wedding! Now this was an interesting twist, but then again, was this an essential bit of knowledge? I had heard it, and maybe some others she pulled aside also, but there were a lot of guests who missed this fact. I would say I don't want to give anything away, but there isn't much to give away. Basically you will hear interesting tidbits like this depending on where you happen to be standing and which members of the cast you wind up talking to, but I think they are all unessential bits of information that aren't really incorporated into any sequence of action.
The next stop after the ceremony is the party, of course! You actually walk a few blocks down the street to Vinnie Black's Coliseum, and you are even assigned to a specific table! Our table was right on the dance floor so we were right in the middle of things. During the reception you get complementary champagne, a full pasta dinner with salad and bread, and a piece of wedding cake. There is also a cash bar for those wanting more than the one glass of champagne. The band was lots of fun, singing exactly all the cover songs you'd expect at a wedding. You hear the toasts, watch the couples first dance, and then get out on the dance floor too! By the end of the night I'd done the electric slide, the chicken dance, a dollar dance with the groom, a conga line, and even a kick line (a little intimidating, thinking how the actresses next to me were real broadway dancers!). You really don't care how silly you are acting at a pretend wedding.
My friends and I had a great time. The reception was a lot of fun, and the more you mingle with the cast the more interesting the experience will seem. Like I said, though, don't expect a full play to be going on before your eyes, like you might at a murder mystery dinner theater, because the show is really just the experience of being there. If I had to go to a wedding every weekend in my real life then maybe I wouldn't have found Tony N Tina's wedding so thrilling, but since I don't I fully enjoyed being at this one. As far as shows go this one is a great deal because you get a full dinner along with the rest of the entertainment.
