Pros: Great music, strong story , bittersweet, but not sticky sweet!
Cons: Music can be VERY, sometimes painfully loud, making lyrics difficult to understand
The Bottom Line: Looking for a meaty show, great music, solid timely/timeless story, and strong performances, Rent is the one to see!! Story/themes are intense, not for pre-teens!

| bls19's Full Review: Rent |
We were taken to see Rent as an anniversary gift. At first I was a bit reticent, thinking it was a show for "young people". Now my husband and I are not ancient, but we are definitely not in the 20, or even the 30-something crowd, however our daughter had raved about the show, (She saw it 3 times!)and we trust her opinions!
Now, I do think the music is fantastic, but I would suggest listening to it before seeing the show. I found the one drawback to the show is that the music can, at times be overpowering, thus the lyrics can be hard to make out. By listening to the score first, and getting the drift, it makes the show easier to comprehend, and much more enjoyable.
The story is loosely based on La Boheme. It is performed with a great deal of energy and passion by a wonderful cast of young people. They perform against a NYC setting, and deftly portray the lives and angst of those who don't fit the norm. Characters range from the starving young artist trying to cut his Jewish mother's apron strings, to his lesbian ex-wife, and her partner, and his depressed room-mate, a lost soul neighbor, all the way to cross dressers, and drug addicts. The show deals with lost souls who have found each other, and have created a family of their own making.
Rent is a love story, about people who get lost, who just don't fit society's norm, and find each other. The stories intertwine, and we see tenderness, caring and the true meaning of love and friendship, found in places most of us would never go!
Our group ranged in age from 30-70, and we all enjoyed the show, and would certainly recommend it. Rent is a must see, but do yourself a favor, and get familiar with the music in advance; it makes a big difference!
