| nate78's Full Review: The Rocky Horror Show |
I'll have you know that before last Saturday, November 25, I was neither a fan of musicals or Rocky Horror. I now may consider myself nearly obsessed with the latter, and far more understanding of the former.
I had seen Rocky Horror several years ago with Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. I was vexed. Granted, I was not as open-minded at that point, but nevertheless I had no idea what I was watching or what this story was about. That was four years ago, and since then hadn't thought much about it since.
This production of Rocky Horror at the Circle in the Square theater in NYC made me a total Rocky Horror junky. Not only were stellar performances given by Joan Jett, Dick Cavett and Rent's former "Mimi", but the theater is so small that you can not miss a thing no matter where you are sitting.
My former problem with musical theater was two fold. First and foremost, most often it takes itself much too seriously. Second, sudden eruptions into musical numbers without warning doesn't thrill me at all, and frankly leaves me quite confused. For those of you who agree with me, Rock Horror is the one show you should make yourself see.
Rocky Horror is very silly. It doesn't take itself seriously and the cast doesn't come across as thinking that what they are doing is the most important thing in the world. Because the show makes no sense and there is no rhyme or reason to what happens in the show, it seems okay that they sing out of context or at inappropriate times as in other musicals.
Rocky Horror is a loud, fun, and silly experience. People who enjoy musical theater should love this. Happily, so will those who usually don't. All of you who loved the movie and are indifferent to musical theater, you'll enjoy this as well.
