David Hirson's ("La Bete) new play on Broadway starring Ron Rifkin (Tony winner "Cabaret") and Daniel Davis ( the incredibly funny butler on "The Nanny") is so incredibly well written and well acted, it deserves a 5 star rating. It's story content will not only attract an intelligent audience because of it's articulate dialogue, but I think it will also attract a fun cult following if this play succeeds because of it's unique presentation and surreal set design. Because of these two aspects, I wouldn't be surprised if a movie is made in the future from it as well.
It's a funny story about a cynical poet who on a bet decides he will stoop so low as to write a play for the theatre...a "prostitution" he calls it. Ironically he does and it succeeds...with flying colors, which turns his world completely upside down!
I saw the play in New York during previews before it was reviewed, but I'm sure this one will be a must on most critic's lists. The whole cast is wonderfully talented, but Daniel Davis is my favorite. He steals the show with his flamboyant characterization and wonderful dynamic presence. I could tell he was happy to be back on the stage after years of television. I highly recommend seeing this play.
