Pros: Lowest fare compared to US airlines, comfortable seats and small gift package.
Cons: Bad customer service
The Bottom Line: I would recommend TAM for its lowest fare compared to other airlines.

I went to Brazil in Sept 2008. It was the first time we went to Brazil and what a great way to start the trip by taking TAM, Brazil's airline. Our flights were from NY to Sao Paulo then Rio de Janiero to NY.
Notorious for their bad customer service, we braced ourselves for the slow, ( very slow) check in process. We were lucky our flight was not the day before. There were flights cancelations the day before due to weather conditions. While we were waiting to checking in, we saw a woman who was upset, yelled about the lack of service and compensation for being stranded at the airport the day before. Not a pretty scene. It took literally two hours for us to get checked in.
Once on board, it was nice. The plane's interior was clean and seats acceptable. Everyone on economy received a small gift pack: toothbrush, ear plugs, come, and socks. I love these small gifts. Food was ok and bathroom was clean.
Then once again on our tranfer flights from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janiero, we received their slow service. We went early because we didn't want to miss our flight. As we waited on line for check-in, the TAM attendant kept calling for customers who needed to board on flights close to the departure time. We noticed many Brazilians would arrive at check-in close to their flight departure and they would get express check. Hmm, maybe we should have done the same. After an hour on line, we finally were checked in.
Overall, the TAM experience was ok. I would go on it again. However, if there is a delay or problems with flights, don't expect any appropriate customer service.
