Never rent from Avis!

The Bottom Line: Never rent from Avis!
A faulty rental car is worse than no car at all, and they had the gall to charge us for their mistake.

We rented a car from Avis because its advertised price for a 1-day rental was the cheapest. We got there, had to wait in a long line, and were given the only car they had available--one which was just returned, so they didn't even have time to clean it. It worked fine that day, but the next morning when we needed to drive to the airport, it wouldn't start. It was not the battery. We called the roadside assistance number and were told it would take an hour for them to bring a replacement car. We explained that we needed to get to the airport, so we had no choice but to take a taxi, which meant waiting 20 minutes for the taxi to arrive and spending $50 on the taxi ride. We assumed we wouldn't be charged for the rental at all, since we were given a faulty car. Yet we were billed $287.20! Evidently we were charged *extra* because Avis gave us a car that wouldn't start! Luckily, one can dispute charges if they were made with a credit card, so we will be sure that Avis will not get away with this injustice. Learn from our mistake, and never rent from Avis!
Update: After several phone calls and delays, the charges were reduced to one day's rental (we found out that we had been charged for a week's rental when we had reserved and used the car for only 1 day). I still believe the entire charge should have been removed, since we were forced to spend almost the cost of a 1-day rental on the taxi when the car wouldn't start. At this point, it is no longer worth my time to get that money back. Needless to say, I will still never rent from Avis again.
