I almost always use Avis when traveling. However, be careful when using a frequent renter card, or as Avis calls it, a "wizard" number. Recently I went to the Avis web site to reserve a car. While I was there I noticed many "internet only" deals. To my surprise when I used my handy "wizard" number, I was quoted a much higher rate. The only reason I got the frequent renter card was to save money. When I left the site, and logged back in as the average person would, I was given the discounted rate. $49 a day for an SUV of my choice, not bad. Too bad the loyal customer doesn't always get the best price.
Still I choose Avis almost all the time, and have had fairly good luck renting from them. The exception is the LAX ( Los Angeles Airport) location. The cars there don't seem to be as clean on the inside, and there are usually hard water spots on the windows and paint. Perhaps they should dry the cars as well as wash them.
Remember that each rental car company has an affiliation with a certain auto maker. Avis has General Motors cars. Budget has Ford products. Thrifty rents Chrysler cars. So if you just hate Chevrolets, don't choose Avis. If you don't care what kind of car you get and want to save a little money, give Avis a try (unless your going to Los Angeles)
