The best thing I've seen in the Car Rental industry - better than getting 250 miles per day for a rental and better than a free day - is the Wizard program from Avis. After a month of renting (i.e. about 30 days), you can become a Wizard member of Avis. For me this distinction came automatically after renting for this period of time.
This is good for everyone because as a Wizard member, rental rates are cheaper. But it's especially good for those under 25, because after you become a Wizard member, you no longer need to pay any underage fees to rent from Avis. So make sure that, when you can, you rent from Avis...it will pay big dividends in the near future if you are 18-24.
I rented a full-size 4 door (Grand Prix) for 6 days from San Jose at the beginning of the summer and paid only $160 including tax. The same rental was $225 for non-Wizard members.
There may even be some shortcuts to membership that I am not aware of. Call Avis at 800.331.1212 to find out if you can qualify immediately.
