Before we visited Chicago and rented a car from Dollar I got online and checked out Dollar's average rating on Epinions. When I saw how low it was my stomach sank into my shoes and stayed there.
My flight went well (I expected that because I was on one of my favorite air carriers) and when we came into Midway (not the best airport in the world) my mother went to get her bags and I went looking for the Dollar counter. It was the last car rental counter, but they had signs the entire way showing where they were. The rental agents were courteous and Dollar even had a full tank service that saved us money in the Chicago area because we purchased it in advance and didn't have to fuel the car before we returned it. The rental counter was right next to the door where all the rental car buses picked up travelers too so that made up for the walk.
Then we stood outside to wait for the bus. Several National buses went by, but no Dollar or Avis or Hertz or anyone else except for city buses would ever show up. I was about to give up when all of a sudden every rental car bus pulled up around the bend. It seems like they're all on the same schedule except for National. National just comes around all the time (good plan on their part). The bus driver helped my mother with her bags and the other man and then we were off.
Picking up the car itself was quite simple, we just got into the car and took off. We had an economy car. A little Hyundai that impressed the heck out of me. It was pretty well taken care of and we only had to put $5.00 of gas in it for the 300 miles that we drove and we left a quarter of a tank of gas in it when we left it off at the drop off point. We had excellent directions to get back to the drop off point and had no troubles finding it. Their computer was down so we had to stand in line back at the airport, but again the clerks were friendly and we were actually charged LESS than quoted!
I believe we not only got our dollar's worth with Dollar, but I'd go back with them again because they were helpful and went out of their way even with the few troubles they did have. We didn't get any automatic upgrades like I've gotten with other rental agencies, but we got courteous service with a well running vehicle at a smaller price than expected.
