Bad Service in California too...

I was in the unfortunate position of having to rent a car recently when my old Honda was in the body shop. AAA recommended Enterprise, and since I don't particularly have a rental company I rely upon I went with their suggestion. AAA arranged to prepay the rental up to the maximum per diem of $30. My problems with their local (Pasadena, CA) office began here.
First, even though the payment arrangements had been made and the office knew what the daily limit was, the young man picked me up at the body shop with a vehicle that rented at more per day. He didn't tell me this until we got back to the office at which point when I objected he said that was my only available choice. Now, I was renting for a week and the weekly rate worked out to less than my maximum, but he didn't offer that to me. When I suggested it he told me they didn't work that way with AAA. By now, I was beginning to get mad. When we got inside I was informed that I needed to provide a credit card to secure my pre-paid sale. I asked if AAA had ever not paid and while he agreed that they had a perfect payment record it didn't matter, they wanted my card. If I were renting a car under normal circumstances I would expect this. I was so furious at his attitude that I told him I didn't have a credit card. At this point he, literally, turned away from me and asked the next person in line if he could help them. The implication was clear, I was not only out of luck, I could find my own way home. I left without renting a car.
Just today, early May 2000, my wife was calling around to try to rent a pickup truck for the weekend. She tried my friends at Enterprise who were happy to oblige. When she mentioned that she had a discount coupon they suddenly had no more pickup trucks to rent. She hadn't even mentioned her last name yet, so all I can assume is, this is standard operating procedure.
Do yourself a favor, pick anyone else besides Enterprise. If I could rate these people any lower I would!
