I had one of the worst experiences of my life with Enterprise Car Rental in Seattle, Washington. To give you a few details, my car was hit and run and my insurance company was required to get me a rental car while the car was being fixed.
Needless to say, the whole experience was bad enough. However, everything seemed great, in December or 1993. I went to the car rental agency to get a small, economical car to rent. At this point, I was listing as a VIP with Enterprise. I had rented from them in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle. I had a perfectly clean driving record, and no damage had ever occurred as a result of my patronage.
When I took the car, I noticed that there was a small crack in the windshield (likely from a rock). I asked the person who was giving me the car where I should note the damage. Since they were getting ready to close the doors, he just indicated something on a piece of paper, and I assumed everything was fine.
About 2 days later, we had an unusual snow storm in Seattle. I kept the car safely in the driveway and took the bus to work. I didn't want to risk anything happening to a rental car. When the snow thawed, the small crack had spread across the windshield due to the cold weather. I thought nothing of it, and neither did the person I dropped the car off to. His exact words, "It would've happened had it been in our lot."
But, to my surprise, two months later, I received a collection notice from Enterprise. They claimed I owed them $500 to fix the windshield! It took me ten letters of correspondence with their "Customer Relations" and "Security" departments to finally get it removed from my otherwise immaculate credit record. Meanwhile, they charged my credit card, and it took me several months to get it refunded and removed from my credit card bill. I was never refunded the lost interest. As a result of their untimely resolution, I missed out on a great loan opportunity because it still showed on my credit history report, and I lost about $25 in interest on my credit card.
My advice--if you don't have a spare few hundred dollars to lose; try another car rental agency. They may have good prices, but in the end you might end up paying more than what you bargained for.
