| IkariGendou's Full Review: Enterprise |
My second-hand 86 Mustang (more often referred to as my 86 Mistake) was in the shop -- again -- and in Houston, a car is vital. (Go ahead, try the bus system when you've got two bad knees and a hip problem, not to mention trying to get anywhere in a sensible fashion.) My mechanic is only three blocks from my apartment, but a rental car agency? Where?
Enterprise did indeed pick me up, in a big shiny red truck that was enough to get my testosterone flowing. A quick drive to the office, some paperwork that took no time at all -- and a small problem. Well, okay, a big problem, because I'm big. At 6'1" and over 350 lbs, I'm a "Gentleman of Royal Proportion," and I just don't fit in most of these "mid-size" cars (most of which used to be called "compacts" in the days when 36 was considered a "medium" waist size).
The fellow helping me looked outside at his immediate selection, which did seem a little thin from where I sat, considered a moment, then said, "Well, how'd you like to have the truck for a few days? No extra charge." Hmm, let me think about this for a moment: A brand new vehicle, with less than 1000 miles on it, shined and serviced to tuning-fork perfection, at the same price as a car I probably couldn't fit into with a shoehorn. Would I like that? Let me consider for about .00000000001 seconds. YES!
So I tooled out of the shop with a big honkin' maxi-truck for the same rate as a mid-size, because the fellow helping me was intelligent enough to realize that he had secured a customer for life by being flexible. And when I was through with the truck, he drove me back to my mechanic's place with all due speed and superlative courtesy, and I will swear by Enterprise for the rest of my days.
Now of course, not everyone's individual experience might be this good. And I don't expect I'll get the Big Red Truck in place of the Little Bitty Chevy next time. But what I admire is the dedication to complete customer satisfaction. The gentleman did whatever it took to ensure that I was on the road, comfortably, and with all due speed. From other opinions that I have read, this dedication would seem to be pretty consistent across Enterprise offices, so my chances of returning are right at 100%.
