I rented and returned a car at Hertz at the Atlanta Airport. Upon return of the car, they overcharged on actual gas used by the vehicle.
I returned the car and forgot to fill it. The drop off center took the mileage and gave me a receipt. Hertz is 'supposed' to charge you the prevailing rate in the area ($4.10) for a gallon of gas, plus a $6.99 fill up fee. I used approximately 10.7 gallons of fuel (246 miles on highway use), but because Hertz did not charge for actual fuel used, but charged instead an estimated amount, I was charged for approximately 16.5 gallons of fuel.
When I contacted Hertz Customer Service, Traci Atkerson, then Patty Wolfe steadfastly insisted that I used 16.5 gallons and to 'prove it' they quoted the automobiles estimated city MPG (15 MPG, but again, I drove freeway miles the entire time).
To add further insult to injury, I was charged a sales tax on the fuel charge - which is already figured into the rate (Georgia is Ad Valorem - tax is included in the price of a gallon of gas). The sales tax was over $7.00 extra. If they were going to charge a sales tax, should they not deduct this from the 'prevailing rate' since this is included in that rate (again, it is an ad valorem rate that they are comparing to).
At the $4.10 a gallon rate plus the reasonable $6.99 refueling charge, the total "should" have come out to $50.86... HOWEVER, Hertz did not charge for the actual gas used - they instead ESTIMATED based on the mileage, thus I was charged $81.57 - a fraudulent overcharge of $30.71.. Thus according to the math, Hertz charged me an effective rate of $6.88 a gallon!!!
again when I first contacted Hertz, Traci Atkerson and then Patty Wolfe lied by INSISTING that I used 16.5 gallons of fuel. When I inquired (complained) further, I was switched to a Linda Baker who stated that they actually charge me on mileage and not on fuel used (though all that was verbally conveyed by the agent at the Hertz desk was the $4.10 charge per gallon plus a $6.99 fill-up rate – not on mileage.). She gleefully stated that this is contained in the very, very small print on the multipage contract. I am toughly disgusted with this company.
