Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was Disney’s attempt to add some much needed thrills to Disney MGM Studios and the theme park complex as a whole. Does it succeed? Yes! I love Aerosmith and was lucky enough to see them in concert a few years ago. However, knowledge of the lyrics in Janie’s Got a Gun is not required to have fun on this attraction. If you love either Aerosmith or roller coasters you will really enjoy this ride.
Walk This Way
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is located in the Sunset Boulevard area of Disney’s MGM Studios. You can reach this area by turning right when you enter the park. Look for the giant red Aerosmith guitar, you can’t miss it! Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is always open as part of Disney’s Extra Magic Hour program for resort guests.
Riding Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster requires some special planning, because this attraction consistently boasts the longest lines in the park. FASTPASS is available, however. If you will be riding both Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror and are visiting first during the busy season, head first to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster for a FASTPASS and then go ride Tower of Terror. When you return, your time window to ride will probably be up and you won’t have to wait in the line that has already formed. If you are visiting during a less busy time of the year, you will probably be able to ride both with relatively short lines as long as you do it right away. However, if you arrive at the park later in the day when FASTPASS has run out you will either have to grin and bear it in the two hour line or try to sneak in during Fantasmic!
Livin’ On the Edge
The queue area of this roller coaster is part of the fun. Lots of Aerosmith pictures and rock band props fill the waiting area. Some of my favorite Aerosmith songs are piped into the hallways. Guests then get to see Aerosmith projected onto a screen, having a recording session. Being the nice guy that he is, Steven Tyler invites the whole group of guests to his concert across town. Unfortunately, time is running a little short so there is no time for a leisurely limo ride!
One Way Street
After the preshow, guests board the “limos”, each accommodating about twenty passengers. These coaster cars have harnesses that go over the head and secure your upper body, so even the most squeamish rider will feel secure. The ride kicks off with a high-speed launch that takes riders from 0 to 60 mph in seconds. Then the limo travels through a series of twists, turns, and loops. Aerosmith blares in the background. I always hear “Love in an Elevator”, and I’m not sure if other songs are played as well because the whole experience happens so fast!
The ride would be enough fun even without the awesome scenery. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster takes place entirely in the dark, lit only by the glow of giant blacklit street signs and California landmarks. You’ll see Yield, Stop, and Do Not Enter signs as well as the trademark HOLLYWOOD moniker. Because it is dark, it is tough to see what comes next. This is kind of like Space Mountain racheted up a couple of notches.
One thing I love about Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is that the ride is very, very smooth. I hate roller coasters that bash my head from side to side and this one doesn’t at all. The ride still feels like new after several years of operation. Although I have kind of a weak stomach (Mission Space brought me to my knees!), I have never been sick on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, even after riding a couple of times back-to-back. The only downside? The ride is too short!
Same Old Song And Dance
Proud of yourself for riding? Well, now you can get a souvenir to show it. The attraction opens into a gift store selling various rock memorabilia. This is actually one of the better gift stores at MGM Studios, and a great place to pick up a gift to take home to an Aerosmith fan. You can get everything here from CDs to T-shirts and guitar picks. Its also a good place to meet those in your party who can’t quite get up the guts to experience Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing
This is a dark and somewhat intense roller coaster and thus has a height requirement of 48 inches. Child swap is available if both adults in your group wish to experience the ride. One of the adults can stay with the child while the other rides, and then the other takes a turn.
Guests with mobility disabilities must be able to transfer out of a wheelchair to ride this attraction. Motorized scooters cannot be taken into the queue.
Amazing
Disney did a solid job with this attraction. It has an excellent queue area, a fast but smooth ride, and a fun theme tying the whole thing together. If you enjoy living life in the fast lane, make Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster your first stop during your day at Disney MGM Studios.
