Twilight zone: Tower of Terror. A ride not to be missed.

Written: Dec 31 '01
Pros:Great effects, theme, and thrills
Cons:Not for those who are scared of heights, and drops
The Bottom Line: This ride is great for those who like thrills and effects.

While celebrating our honeymoon in Disney World, back in April, my wife and I were at the MGM Studios. One of my most favorite rides there is the Twilight Zone Terror of Terror. I insisted that we go on this ride due to my experience with it several years before. She agreed to join me for the tour part but do to her fear of Plummeting she said that she would be proudly taking the so-called “Chicken Exit”. Now our journey begins.

We approached the ominous tower. It stands at 199 feet with obvious damage to the structure (we learn later of what caused this). This building is the old Hollywood Tower Hotel which a 1920’s look to it. When we reached it we had to enter through the long winding path through the garden. This line took about 30 minutes till we were inside the lobby. The lobby was dark and dusty and decorated with old sofas, marble archways, chairs, and lamps. We traveled through the roped pathways till we reached the Bellhop. She then split the hotel visitors into groups and had theses groups stand in front of a huge wooden door. Eventually our door opened allowing us to enter an old library of the hotel. The room was decorated with trophies of once hunted animals, old and musty books and a lonely television that was by another door. After off the travelers entered this library the huge door shut behind us. Suddenly the lights started to flicker as lightning struck nearby. The lightning struck again; the lights went out and the television went on. On the screen was the likeness of Rod Sterling. He told us the history of the building. On it’s opening day, October 31, 1929 (I think that is the right year) there was a family in the elevator. As they were traveling to their floor the building got hit by lightning. The cause the two passenger elevators to disappeared into nothingness (hence the damage to the outside of the building). We now found ourselves in the boiler room of the building. Here we encountered more lines taking us to the “Service elevators”. When we reached them my wife and I split up. I caught the elevator and she found the exit.

Now for the fun. After being seated the doors closed and stopped on the third floor. The doors opened and we looked out. The family that was in that elevator on the T.V. was now standing in the hallway inducing us to exit the elevator. They slowly faded away and we could see the window at the end of the hall. As we (me and the 17 strangers on the ride with me) stared at the window the hall went black and stars started to shine, even in the elevator. At the same time the window started floating around the room. It suddenly shatters and then the doors close. We were then whisked to the fifth floor: The Twilight Zone. The car I was in started to move form the elevator and through the room. There were floating eyeballs, clocks, lightning cracks, flying book, and almost everything else in the opening of the Twilight zone shows. At the end of the hallway we entered another elevator. We suddenly shot upwards and came to a door. It opened and we were 13 stories above the park. Instantly the elevator dropped and shot up again. After several times of doing this the elevator settled on the bottom floor. On our way out Rod Sterling gave us a warning to avoid the elevator and take the Stairs. I met my wife in the gift shop that the dumps us into.

When at MGM, and if your aren’t scared of heights or drops I highly recommend this amazing presentation and ride.
