| VeeZee's Full Review: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror |
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney-MGM Studios will forever change the way you look at thrill rides. Roller coasters have nothing on this freak-you-out free-falling fright of a scary good time. This other dimension will make even the bravest of them emit white-knuckled screams. Don't believe me? I dare you to see for yourself. Regardless of how creepy you thought the Twilight Zone series was, your first encounter at the abandoned Hollywood Hotel will surely scare the daylights out of you.
As you approach the decrepit hotel, you'll notice how it looms over you, beckoning you forth. To further raise the hairs on the back of your head, ghastly screams will sound as if they are emanating from the very belly of the imposing edifice. You may have heard how exciting the experience will be, but as you draw closer, doubts might begin to plague your mind. Cast them out, or else you'll always wonder what lies behind the frightful facade. It helps if you have another brave soul to accompany you along the uncertain journey.
There is a winding wait before you can step inside the haunted hotel, and the ever-present screams from within will quicken your pace as you anticipate what lies ahead. Eventually, your turn will be up, to enter the elevator that is to enter the other dimension and elevate your fear. Fear of the unknown is a scary thing, and that is just what you will face your first time stepping onto the elevator as the grim-faced guide ushers you in. No hint of a smile on their face to belie the convincing illusion.
Inside the elevator, you'll be seated along with a group other brave passengers. It will take a moment to get everyone comfy, but not so much that the air isn't charged with hesitant anticipation and outright fear. Once you've settled in, it is too late to turn back. You'll have a quick moment to change your mind before you step onto the elevator, so be sure that you want to sit down in that seat when you do because there is no looking back. There is a bar in front of you to grip onto, and most likely you'll need it before the ride is through.
Now, before I go any further, I should say that I've survived the Tower of Terror on many occasions, even if barely. I remember way back when when there was only one full drop after a half drop. Then they upped that number to two full drops, and now at least three and maybe more-it is quite easy to get disoriented in the process.
Back to the first experience. After you've settled in, the ride will begin to move up, up, up, and then forward. You'll be moving through a field of stars it seems, then along a hotel corridor where you'll meet the perished ones who plummeted to their death in the elevator oh so many years ago, or so the story goes. With a strike of lightning, everything will go pitch black, doors will open in front of you as the sun's blinding light (if you are riding during the day) hits your eyes. Just as you realize you are looking outdoors into the park from way up above, the elevator car will drop, and it will feel as if your stomach was left somewhere up above.
The feeling is like no other when you are dropping a distance that feels like miles in your mind, and the loss of control in that your feet are most certainly not planted firmly on the ground is oddly at the same time both terrifying and exhilarating. If you are a thrill seeker, and want the ultimate rush, the Tower of Terror is the place to go. As they drop you over and over again, and your fellow passengers' screams echo your own, you'll lose a sense of yourself as the adrenaline courses through your veins, and cross the fine line between terror and euphoria. You won't know why you at the same time will want it to stop yet go no and on, you just will. As you finally touch back down and it is time to exit the elevator, you can say that you too survived the Tower of Terror, and will most likely instantly want to go back for more.
If you think the Tower of Terror will be a bit too scary for you (it will for small children!), you can rest assured that NOTHING is scarier than the picture that they take of you at some point during the ride. They have a knack for catching you at the worst possible moment. You and countless others can see the picture, and even buy it if you're brave enough, after the ride.
