| jo.com's Full Review: Honey, I Shrunk the Audience |
During Thanksgiving of 2001, my husband and I took our 3 adult children and one of their friends to Walt Disney World and the surrounding area. Two are 21, one is 24 and the other is 27. We had been to Disney World a few times but not since they have become adults. Epcot was on our list and what we thought of Epcot the 3rd time around may be another review, but I will tell you that what we thought of "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" the first time around is that it is hilarious to say the least.
All 4 of these sometimes hard to please young people laughed and said it was the best show they saw this trip and thinking back on our other ones, it definitely ranks up there as one of the best ones around.
We went here 2 months after 9/11 so rarely did we have to wait in line and this show was no exception. Other than having to wait a few minutes to go into the pre show we got into the next show. You see the pre show in a room with no seating. If you are with anyone who cant stand for long either dont have them come in or arrange for a chair to be brought in. I find it uncomfortable to just stand in one spot for any length of time and would have sat on the floor but it isn't allowed.
What Im calling the pre show is in what I think of as a holding room. This was a waste of time and I really dont know why they do it. Well I do. It is an advertisement for Kodak film with the song True Colors by Cyndi Lauper and various pretty pictures shown as a slide show while the music is playing. If it werent obviously an ad and I could have sat down for what seemed like an eternity but may only have been 10 minutes, I may have not minded it. Luckily Honey I Shrunk the Audience was so funny, this torture was worth it and I quickly forgot it. So just think I may be exaggerating and go, pay your dues, close your eyes and just listen to the music!
When the pre-show is over we were told how to put on our 3-D glasses but not to put them on until the show starts. I have seen many 3-D shows and Honey I Shrunk the Audience really was one of the best.
We were led into a large auditorium with very comfortable seats. It was air conditioned so if you go when it is hot, youll be able to get some relief from the heat while laughing. Youll put on your 3-D glasses and watch this quite amazing show which stars Eric Idle and Rick Moranis as the genius inventor, Wayne Szalinski. You may recognize him right away even if you didnt see Disneys Honey I Shrunk the Kids as a movie. His wife and son from the movie are in this show also.
Professor Wayne Salinsky is being recognized as Inventor of the Year and the fun starts when his new invention- his shrinking machine- shrinks us - or so it seems.
The special effects, visually and tactilely are fantastic throughout the approximately 20 minute show which ends with us returning to our normal size and the most hilarious ending I have seen just about anywhere.
From http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneylandresort/Disneyland/Lands/Attractions/index?id=1107:
The auditorium is wheelchair accessible and assistive-listening devices which amplify the audio at this location are available at Guest Relations.
For safety and comfort, attraction may be too intense for children and some adults.
Please Note: This attraction contains strobe-lighting and other special effects that may be too intense for some Guests. The floor moves during certain portions of the film. Service animals are not recommended on this attraction.
Additional thoughts
I have read some older reviews of this show and do agree that this may be too intense for many children and some adults. There is a sign that is posted before you go in to that effect. One review I read said that she had wished there were some notice that it may not be appropriate for young children. That sign may not have been there a year ago but it is now. I take these signs seriously. Although my neck and back are fine, if the sign says "this ride may not be appropriate for anyone with neck or back problems or who is pregnant," I stay away. I know what I can handle and I would take the warning that this may scare some very seriously.
I was spooked at one point and usually am not during 3-D shows!
This was wonderful for our adult children and a highly recommend. I would highly recommend it for everyone unless you have a child who gets scared. There are some very frightening effects in Honey I Shrunk the Audience. But remember your child can take off the glasses at any time, making some of it less scary and you can always leave.
Dont miss it unless you know your children will be scared. Explain that with the glasses on things will look like they are very close to them but they really are not and that they may feel things that are just pretend.
For our family this was definitely a highlight of our trip and of Epcot. I would go see it again even if it meant watching the Kodak moments!
