Okay, so you're probably thinking that My Family + Disney = Bad News. My father broke his arm on Indiana Jones, and I separated my shoulder on this flawed ride. Then, Disney refused to take responsibility, and told me that I had to pay for my treatment in the Emergency Room out of pocket, but that's another story for another time.
This is a brand new ride at Epcot Center. Sponsored by GM, the idea of the attraction is that you're riding in a car through a test course that they design for you in the "briefing room". You're shown the different tests you're going to do, then jump into a car that seats three in the front and three in the back. There is no roof to this thing, either. Then, you put on your seatbelt, and away you go.
A little man is narrating the whole ride, and you see video screens of the "testing" you here and there. They let you know the results of the "tests" as you go along. It's a cute idea. Too bad it was such a horrible experience for me.
The first test you go through is climbing a hill at the highest speed you can go in your car. However, you have no control over this. There's a little console in front of you (both in the front and back seats) that has a speedometer on it. The highest we climbed was 27 MPH. I'm not impressed.
After the hill, you come to a little video monitor and the host and his employee brief you again. The second "test" is a brake test. You drive really fast, then are supposed to round a corner and stop on a dime.
This is where my little accident occurred.
Just as we hit a nice speed, the entire ride suddenly shut down. BAM! Just like that. I don't know how fast we were going, because I was holding the bar in front of me, but we were going pretty dang fast. Our car stopped, and everyone jerked forward. My seatbelt somehow slipped, and separated my shoulder.
We sat in our cars for at least ten minutes, until a tech (person that works on crew) finally came around and got us out. I told her what happened, and I was taken to first-aid after 10 more minutes of walking through the ride.
Oh, don't worry, though. They made everything better by giving us a re-entry pass where we could cut to the front of the line. Maybe they would even things out for me and separate my left shoulder, too.
The normal waiting line was exactly 120 minutes. TWO HOURS to wait for a ride? I don't think so, Mickey. Fast Pass, which lets you sort of reserve your seats for the ride for a specific time during the day, was already closed, so we decided to go onto the Single Rider line. This line goes much faster, as your party is broken up and you're stuffed into another car so there aren't any empty seats. (A note about fast pass: Apparently, you can only have one fast pass for one ride at a time.) I don't know what the regular line is like, but I've been told that you see lots of test crashes and such.
I had a very bad experience with this ride. We were stuck in an area that smelled like burnt rubber. We had to climb out of our cars and walk around the track. I felt very unsafe and completely uncomfortable. What really stinks is that Dionne25 and I didn't even get to go to the Magic Kingdom yet. Now that I'm in a sling, I won't be able to enjoy my time there, either. Ah, well. I guess I'll be able to write reviews on the tame rides at Disney.
Shoot. Small World here I come. . .
