| badmom's Full Review: Walt Disney World Epcot - Germany |
My family on my mother's side is all German from the Black Forest area. We still have relatives that live there, and I recall my great grandparents speaking German when I was very small. I grew up with grandma making saurkraut on the back porch (a smelly process that produced a wonderous mass of kraut), and an assortment of relatives who made sinfully rich real German food.
When you walk through the Epcot area devoted to different areas of the World, the huge old German castle catches your eye. The large grey stone building towers over most of the other buildings around it, and houses the main restraunt in the German section.
We ate at the German restraunt here, and I can tell you, this is the good stuff. From the sausages and krauts, to the pork roast with fruit dressing, potatoes, rolls, and all the rest, this is it! There is a floor show that gets the entire audience involved, from the most out-going to the most introverted, soon everyone is singing and clapping along with the show! Beer comes in huge glass with all the froth and foam, and is non-stop if you wish. The interior is huge and cavernous, I couldn't guess at the number of people it will hold, and you are seated at long wooden tables. Along the walls there are country-type scenes done in realistic deep releif--one near our table was of a mill with water wheel and autumn trees, the trees actually came out into the restraunt--not pinned to the wall, and the waterwheel turned and worked as a type of fountain--flowing over rocks on it's way down the scene. It was just wonderful, and just another indication of how Disney covers every little detail. As with most Disney restraunts, however, it is BUSY, so recommend booking your reservation before you even leave home. Even then, be prepared to wait. Most people take a long time to eat here, especially during the floor show, so often you will find that a wait of up to an hour is not uncommon.
Outside there are gift shops for everything from clocks to expensive glassware and toys for the kids. One shop near the Castle will even make you a doll to order, with your choice of hair, eyes and skin tone, then you can pick the outfit you want it dressed in. As with most things at Disney, you could probably buy alot of it cheaper elsewhere, we didn't end up buying anything, but it's still fun to look. Almost straight across from the German Pavillion is the pond where the evening fireworks display goes off every night. After a full meal at the restraunt, it makes a fine end to the evening to amble over and watch them. Get your spot early, however, if you want to sit on the edges, it fills quickly to standing room only! You will also want to watch the area AROUND the pond during the show, as the buildings put on a show of their own! There are sincronized lights and fireworks loaded into the buildings, and while the firework and light show is going on in front of you, the buildings "dance" along in the background. One part of the show in particular we found amazing--to the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies, they have a laser ballerina dancing, she is so real you would swear it is a woman out there dancing on the water.
For us it was a most mermorable evening that we plan to repeat on our next visit back.
