| jenb123's Full Review: Walt Disney World Epcot - Mexico |
Having never been outside the United States, visiting World Showcase is the closest I’ve been to Mexico. Since I was a kid, this has been one of my favorite pavilions at Epcot. I’m not sure if it is the ride or just the atmosphere, but stepping inside this great pyramid was as exciting in 2000 as it was back when I had braces and big hair.
On our visit to Epcot this past June, the Mexico pavilion was one of the first attractions we saw. We had just gotten our FASTPASS for Test Track and had about an hour and a half to kill. The breathtaking pyramid was visible from where we were standing and I suggested we grab a snack and explore Mexico.
We decided to eat at Cantina de San Angel which was located alongside the lagoon. My husband and I shared cantina nachos with our toddler while our five year old had a kid’s meal consisting of a beef burrito, chips and a churro. Not surprisingly, she took a few bites of the burrito, handed it over to me and ate the churro. Eating outdoors gave us a fabulous view of World Showcase as my daughters enjoyed watching the birds gobbling up bits of food they dropped “accidentally.”
After we ate we decided to beat the heat inside the pyramid. With two small children, we only glanced at the exhibit just inside the pavilion and headed straight for El Rio Del Tiempo: The River of Time. This short boat ride is sort of like a cross between It’s A Small World and the retired attraction If You Had Wings back at the Magic Kingdom. As your boat sails down el rio, you pass a volcano as well as the San Angel Inn, the pavilion’s other restaurant. The brief journey showcases Mexican culture of the past and present including videos, music and the south of the border version of It’s A Small World. The kids enjoyed the simulated fireworks at the end of the ride. My husband and I enjoyed the fact that there was no line for this ride.
We then decided to browse the Plaza De Los Amigos, a mercado within the pyramid. The market is made to look like you are outdoors at night. We saw piñatas, large sombreros, maracas, woven baskets, pottery and clothing for sale. We almost caved and bought maracas for the kids, but decided against souvenirs that made noise and had weapon potential. The sombreros were tempting, but mucho grande. I had to bypass Artesanias Mexicanas because the beautiful merchandise they had for sale was mucho breakable.
The cast members were extremely friendly, in authentic Mexican garb. My children seemed enchanted by the music in the background and the attention from their new amigos. To be honest, out of the entire Walt Disney World Resort the cast members representing their countries were among the most talkative and genuinely helpful of all.
And so ended our visit to Mexico, I enjoyed it as much as I did years ago. My children enjoyed the boat ride and my husband enjoyed the cantina. Just as I’d finally gotten the song from El Rio Del Tiempo: The River of Time out of my head....Ay caramba! Overall though, a pleasant and beautiful pavilion, this is a must see at Epcot, don’t stroll past the pyramid.
