Oh my aching feet!
Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida sure it a lot of fun, but it’s killer on the feet. My kids and I visit Florida every summer. My family lives here and it gives us a chance to see them, as well as find some fun in the sun. This year, I decided to give my son a trip to the Magic Kingdom for his kindergarten graduation present. Up until I went to college I lived in Florida my whole life, and a trip to Disney was a given every year. Many times it was three or four time a year. So I kind of consider myself a resident expert on visiting the park. I know when and where to go at what times. I know which rides are busy at what times. And, I can tell you the best times to eat some grub. Oh! And I know about some wonderful hidden secrets!
The Product:
The Enchanted Tiki Room is one of those hidden secrets. When I was a kid, this show was always one we wanted to skip. It was for the “older generations”. With a giant wooden pyramid-type building overlooking the Jungle Cruise in Adventure Land, The Tiki Room is now a “must see” at Disney.
The Old Tiki Room:
Back in the 70’s this exhibit was revolutionary. You would enter in a round theater with a large plant structure in the middle and when the show started the ceiling would light up. Above your head were a few dozen animatronic birds perched on tree branches and swings. Their show consisted of about 15 minutes of singing and a decent light show. Horribly unimpressive to a seven-year-old.
The New Tiki Room:
WOW! When entering into the same round room, the same birds are perched on the same branches and swings. However, the new Tiki Room is under “new management”. Featuring Iago, the evil bird sidekick of Javar from Aladdin, and Zazu, the right-hand-man of the Lion King’s Mufasa. These two birds “kick it up a notch” with an amazing funky new show. Packed with the same ole’ “older generation” Tiki Bird songs of the past, mixed with groovin’ pop songs of today.
Our Experience:
Honestly? I took my son into the Enchanted Tiki Room because it was so incredibly hot in the park. I was getting light headed and knew I couldn’t stand in another line for another 30 minutes. If my memories served me right you not only got to sit down in the Tiki Room, but it was air conditioned too. Perfect!
Boy, was I blown away. I expected to close my eyes and cool down for a few minutes. I did get to cool down, but I sure didn’t close my eyes!
The show starts with the original Tiki Birds and the lighting up of the ceiling, showing off all the beautifully colored tropical birds. Then the surprise comes. Iago and Zazu come out of the ceiling and the show begins.
Iago has all these grandiose plans for the Tiki Room, since he and Zazu are the new managers. A disco-esc light show is performed while Iago sings a song to the tune of some of the Aladdin songs. By doing so, he upsets the “Tiki gods” and they banish him from the joint, while the “Tiki gods” take over the show. The Tiki gods are all around the outer parts of the building, disguised as Totem Poles. They do some rap and hip-hop tunes, and then Iago shows up again. He admits the “Tiki gods” knew what they were doing in the first place, and announces he and Zazu are going to be millionaires with their new “old” show. The show closes with a huge perch of tropical birds emerging from the ceiling singing “Conga” by Gloria Estefan.
My son was mesmerized by the whole show, as was I. It was totally unexpected and wonderfully creative. Not only did I get to cool off for 15 minutes, but I also got a nice surprise of a show.
I must warn parents of small children. It’s a loud show. They simulate lightning, loud thunder and a rainstorm during the show.
When to go: During the hottest part of the day or during peak attendance times.
Show time: Approximately 15 minutes
Wait Time: none
Preshow: There’s a covered area in front of a waterfall that gives you a pre-show before entering the actual attraction. The wait/preshow is about 15 minutes.
I highly recommend The Enchanted Tiki Room attraction, and don’t worry about sitting under perched birds. These animatronic birds just sing.
