| goldjay's Full Review: The Enchanted Tiki Room |
The Enchanted Tiki Room, Under New Management, is a show that lasts about 15 minutes. We saw the older version in 1996 and, personally, I liked the older version better. There was more singing and more fun to the older show, in my opinion. Nonetheless, this is an attraction at Walt Disney World that is not to be missed. Even with its updates, it is still a fun show and one the kids and adults alike can enjoy.
This show is located in Adventureland, near the Magic Carpets of Aladdin ride (which can easily be seen from a bit away). As an air conditioned show building, it is a good show to catch during the hot part of the day. It is rarely crowded and since the show is short, it re-seats pretty quickly too.
The Show
The show actually starts before you even enter the theatre. The line is actually several lines, one behind the next, so that while you are waiting, you can view the waterfall. Then, a door behind a waterfall opens and two audio-animatronic birds appear. They are talking to each other about the new theatre and new management. Then, a cast member announces that it is almost time for the show to begin but the birds argue that they are not ready!! The doors close and the waterfall resumes.
A cast member stands aside as the doors to the theatre open. The theatre is darkened but light enough to see the seats. The theatre is situated such that the seats are like rings around the outer edges of the walls. There are many rows and the center of the theatre itself is empty. Once everyone is seated, animatronic birds come out of the ceiling and start singing the Tiki Song that was in the original show. They do not get to finish the song before Iago and Zazu (from Aladdin and Lion King, respectively) come out and begin to argue. Iago wants to modernize the show but Zazu and the other birds argue that the Tiki gods will not like it. Eventually the Tiki goddess appears and takes care of Iago who disappears in smoke. So as to not frighten young children, Iago does reappear before the show is over though he is covered in bandages from his disaster.
Compared to the Original Version of the Show
The original show closed in September, 1987 and reopened in April, 1988, under new management. The show is very different from the original, attempting to appeal to todays audiences, I suppose. First of all, I think that this show is much shorter than the original show. The original show, still shown in Disneyland, was 16 minutes. This new show is only 10 minutes and feels quite short!
Additionally, the current show features Iago and Zazu whereas the older version had four different hosts. These host birds are still in the new show but with a much smaller role than originally. The new show has a lot less singing and, though it does have a plot, it is weak. Also missing are the singing flowers and tiki drummers of the past. All of these differences, in my opinion, detract from the show. I liked the older show much better!
Recommendations
If you are in Walt Disney World and have a bit of time, go ahead and see the Enchanted Tiki Room, Under New Management. It is not a bad show but it is not as fun as the older one was. Children might enjoy it because they will know Iago and Zazu from their favorite movies but otherwise, I dont see the advantages of the newer show. This show rarely has much of a wait and much of that is occupied by the pre-show anyway. If you are pressed for time, however, dont feel bad if you do miss this show. It wont be a great loss! I wish theyd bring back the older version!
