When I heard that Disney had redone The Enchanted Tiki Room, it never dawned on me that they would ruin it. I’d loved those singing flowers and chanting totems, where else on earth could you sit underneath dozens of birds without worrying about it? Humming Let’s All Sing Like The Birdies Sing, I brought my family to see The Enchanted Tiki Room-Under New Management.
The preshow had changed, for the better in my opinion. I had hoped the rest of the show would also have improved with the addition of Zazu and Iago, more recent Disney feathered friends. We sat down and watched the cast member begin the show the same way they did ten years ago, by tapping Jose’s perch to wake him up. Along with co-hosts Michael, Pierre and Fritz, the show began with the original theme song, within seconds everything went downhill...
As funny as the character of Iago was in Aladdin, the loud and obnoxious bird simply was not Tropical Serenade material. Zazu, of Lion King fame was the “Felix Unger” to Iago’s “Oscar Madison” so to speak. A very odd couple who should not have been flocking together. Jose and company no longer ruled the roost and the new storyline was for the birds.
Gone were the old favorite songs, the drumming Tikis and most of the show’s charm. Adding a “volcano goddess” with red eyes and loud thunder and lightning spoiled the show for little kids. Rather than delighting toddlers and preschoolers, the new show sent crying children into their parents’ laps. Before most moms could calm their children down, the show was over.
Had Disney simply added some “hip tunes” and perhaps cameo appearances by Zazu and Iago, the show would not have been such a letdown. I think that people who had not seen the original show probably missed the minor humor while those who had seen it were left wondering why the show had been butchered.I know I’m not alone in feeling as though The Enchanted Tiki Room is not the same under new management.
If you are a first time visitor to the Magic Kingdom, I’d suggest skipping this attraction altogether. If you are a fan of the original Tropical Serenade, you’ll probably be disappointed. In addition, if your children are frightened by loud noises and darkness, they might be terrified by the show.
The only positive aspects of the show, in my opinion, were the short wait and air conditioned theater. When the park is packed and the heat index is 100 degrees, short lines and a cool seat make even this spoiled serenade a bit more attractive.
I hope that the next time we visit Walt Disney World that The Enchanted Tiki Room is under NEW New Management and that Iago will have finally “flown the coop.” After seeing Disney restore the original Country Bear Jamboree which too had been “updated” at one point, I will pray to the “Tiki Gods” that The Tiki Room again is Enchanted some day.
