Located in Walt Disney World , Orlandos Magic Kingdom is Splash Mountain, one of the three major attractions at Magic Kingdom including Space Mountain and the Haunted Mansion . It is located in Frontierland, one section of the park, and one of the most crowded. It is the main attraction at Frontierland, and it is also the most noticeable since its over 87 ft. tall!
Lining Up
You have two choices when it comes to lines at Disney World:
1.) Wait in the Stand-By line
2.) Get a Fastpass
The Stand-By line is your everyday line that moves slower than molasses growing in an igloo - well, not that slow when it comes to Splash Mountain. This line is the regular line that usually lasts about an hour on very busy days in the summer, winter vacation, or spring break. When we went in December, the Stand-By line was about five minutes long...not bad!
Or, you can use Disney Worlds FASTPASS invention: a way to get ahead of the long lines and get on the ride! How to use Fastpass: take your entrance ticket and insert it into one of the Fastpass machines near an attraction that you want to go on. A ticket will print out from the machine saying two times. Return between those times and you will be allowed to go to the front of the Stand-By line! Its as simple as that. Tips -
- Only use Fastpass on rides that have long lines; if the line is short, you shouldnt mind waiting less that 20 minutes. However, if the Splash Mountain line is over 20 minutes long on a hot day, you might as well use the Fastpass.
- Dont stall to get a Fastpass ticket. Get your ticket as soon as possible to get on the ride earlier!
- If the line is really long and you cant get a Fastpass due to the fact that you got a Fastpass for another ride in the last hour, COMPLAIN! to Customer Service. Trust me, theyll give you a Fastpass if you complain, and if they dont, tell them about what a low rating youll give their park on epinions, and make sure to rub in how many people will read your review each day...hehehe.
Feature Presentation
Splash Mountain comes from the 1946 animated film, Song of the South. Therefore, while going through the attraction, dont be surprised when you see Brer Bear, Brer Fox, and Brer Rabbit. When going through the attraction, it is actually a story. Brer Fox and Brer Bear and trying to fool some animals to eat them, so they are basically the bad guys in the story. Of course, in the end, the good guys win and Brer Bear gets stuck in a small cave.
The ride is in a log boat, but its made out of plastic and metal. It seats eight passengers, four rows with two in each. Just a tip, if you are heavy and are in the back, everyone in your boat will get drenched! There are no bars going across your lap, but there is a bar to hold onto in front of you.
There are many lights all over the place lighting the story, and of course theres a lot of music singing Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da, Zip-A-Dee-Day, my oh my what a wonderful day - plenty of sunshine heading my way, Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da, Zip-A-Dee-Day! Supposedly, the characters are singing the songs as the boat takes you through the middle of all of them in a forest/swamp environment. When this song is being sung, you come to the grand finale with the boat Zip-A-Dee-Lady with many ducks, roosters, and pigs on board joining in the song.
Of course, there is the fact of getting wet. You may get drenched, or you may just get sprinkled (I doubt it). It all depends on what section of the boat youre sitting on. Of course, everyone will get wet on the 40 M.P.H, 50 ft., 45 degree angle drop where everyone can see you! This drop is the only drop that is outside as the rest of the ride is indoors. There are also some small drops while indoors, but they wont get you nearly as wet as you will at the major drop.
Exiting
After the ride is all over, you can go to the exit and purchase a ride photo. This photo comes in a Splash Mountain frame, and the picture is taken on the major drop near the end of the ride. The picture purchase section is in the Splash Mountain Gift Shop which has key chains, ice cream, T-shirts, hooded sweat shirts and candy.
My Thoughts
I love Splash Mountain. So do my cousins who went on with me who are five-years-old, and seven-years-old. My wife loved it too - we all loved it so much that we went on it three times in a row last December, and the other five times that we went, we remembered to never to skip this ride. Why do I like it?
- Its great for adrenaline junkies, and Im an adrenaline junkie. The drops really add a lot of excitement, and when youre in the forest/swamp environment, it really adds to the theme of the ride and build up excitement.
- Its great for kids, so this leads to no kid nagging! My cousins told me they loved the lights and songs, and of course the water when it would splash on you - the water is especially a pleasure on hot days in the Orlando/Kissimmee area.
If you find yourself at Walt Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom, you really will want to try Splash Mountain. It is a great way to cool off on a hot day, and the music and drops are always an exciting pleasure. And remember to bring along my Fastpass tips!
