Going to Disney World ( http://www.epinions.com/content_89126309508 ) is like the first time that you drive a car - it is like entering a new world - its like...well, lets just say its different. One ride at Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom ( http://www.epinions.com/content_85089226372 ) that really stands out in my mind is Bud Lightyears Space Ranger Spin. This attraction comes from the Pixar movie Toy Story.
Waiting, Waiting....How Much Longer?
One major issue is lines. Since the last time I went on this ride was back in December, there wasnt much traffic in the parks. When we would go during April, July, or August, the parks would all be jammed packed and lines would last over an hour for this ride. Lucky for us, this December the lines lasted less than five minutes.
For those long hot spring/summer days in the Orlando/Kissimmee area, Disney has created something called FASTPASS. This is how it works: your ticket for entering the Disney park is inserted into a FASTPASS Machine near the entrance/exit of the attraction you want to use the pass for. Then, a ticket will be printed out saying showing a time that you can come back. If you come back at the given time, you get to go into a separate line which takes you to the front of the Stand-By (regular) line.
The Attraction
Buzz Lighyears Space Ranger Spin is more of a three minute attraction rather than a ride. There are no sharp turns and it doesnt go fast. Its actually a moving attraction that goes in a continuous line of buggies that seat two people.
During the attraction, you are playing a game. The objective of the game is to collect as many Zurg Points as possible. Zurg is the evil toy in Toy Story 2. You can collect these points by shooting your laser at the little Zurg circles that have a Z on them. Every circle is worth a different amount of points ranging from 100-30,000 points.
A variety of mixed colors are used to try to trick you into thinking different places have Zurg Points; there are also many colorful lights all over the place to make it harder for you. At the end of the attraction, the laser will add up all your points so you can try to defeat your own score again.
The buggy that youre in is well designed for this game. Since the laser gun can only move about 130 degrees, you cant get all the Zurg Points due to the fact that the they are all over the place. So, there is a little stick in the buggy that allows you to go in a complete 360 degree turn.
Sometimes Zurg Points are on moving objects. For example, there is a plastic flower that moves up and down, side to side at one part. On it is a Zurg Point. If you hit that Zurg Point with your laser, the amount of points you earn will be a lot higher than 100.
Toward the end there is a tunnel that you go through. This tunnel has red lights going around in circles over and over. If you look up at the tunnel you will notice its a screen. On the screen Zurg Points are moving all around. This is a good time to max-out and try to get as many points as possible.
My Thoughts
This is a good attraction for everyone in the family. When we were traveling back in December, we had a 77-year-old, 59-year-old with Movement Sickness Disease, a few 20-40-year-olds, a 16-year-old, 12-year-old, 7-year-old, 4-year-old, and a 2-year-old (and there is no height limit!). Everyone commented that it was fun - the 7 and 4-year-olds dragged us on it again to try to improve their scores on the Zurg Points.
I enjoyed this attraction very much. It is a nice way to start off the day at the park. This is because the line usually isnt that long in the morning since people are usually thinking of the bigger rides line Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Haunted Mansion. Or, this is also a good attraction for the end of the day. Since it doesnt move fast or anything, its considered relaxing and is a good way to cool off.
So next time youre at Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom, go ahead and give Buzz Lightyears Space Ranger Spin a try. You will love it, your kids will love it, your family will love it!
