Riding on Space Mountain is like blasting off to the stars on a rocket ship. Yes it is! Dont argue with me (I am getting aggravated here!) -- just listen.
Lines for Space Mountain at both Disneyworld (Orlando) and Disneyland (Anaheim) are always long. Dont you just hate it when you see crowds of people pushing to get in line for the better rides? I certainly do and it would be weird if you didnt; its only natural to think that way. Well, hopefully you know what I mean.
Fastpass - Its So Fast, That It Puts You In Front Of The Line!
Fortunately, the people of Disney came up with an easy invention to make waits for rides shorter! You guessed it, its called the Fastpass system. This system allows you to use your ticket as a pass to getting in front of the people in line. What happens is you insert your ticket inside the Fastpass machines outside the ride you want to go on. It will then print out a different ticket with two times on it such as 12:00 and 1:00. If you return between 12:00 and 1:00, you will be allowed to cut in front of the majority of the line. This is easily done by entering through a different entrance than those who are not using their Fastpass tickets.
There is a secret that I am not supposed to tell you about but...you dont have to return between the two times printed on the ticket. You are allowed to return anytime after the first time on the ticket. In this case, you can return from 12:00 till anytime you wish. The ticket doesnt expire after 1:00.
Now that we have understood the Fastpass system, you may be wondering what the lines would be like if you didnt use your Fastpass ticket on this ride. Well, once when I went to Disneyworld (Magic Kingdom park in Orlando) there was no line whatsoever! I ended up going three times until a line started building up.
The Cool Line -
However when there is a line it shouldnt bug you. The line is always indoors which will prevent you from getting soaked if its raining or from getting sunburned if it is a blazing hot day in Florida. While on line, there are televisions that make it feel like you are going to blast off to outer space. They talk about time till blast off, how long it will take to get there and how long you will be up there. It isnt real, but it feels like you are an astronaut getting prepared for you flight to the stars and back.
Boarding The Rocket -
Once the car pulls up to the station, you will notice that there is a car attached to the back of it. In reality, there are two cars attached and each car seats three people. Each car is in the shape of a rocket ship.
Once in your seat, strap yourself in with the seat belt as if you are getting into the car. My memory does not show myself putting a harness above my shoulders like rides that go upside down. Then the usually over-friendly staff will come and give your seat belt a good tug to make sure you are strapped in properly and safely.
Into The Darkness -
Then off you will go, up a hill with a small but bright light on the top. Right before you hit that light, you will go down just a bit and make a turn.
The ride is all indoors and pitch black atmosphere. There is a line that goes through every rocket/ car that is glow-in-the-dark so you know where all the other screaming comes from. The ride doesnt go upside down and doesnt have any steep drops. It is mostly turns and twists. Sometimes you turn while dropping.
The ride lasts for about 2:00 and 30 seconds and is all basically about sharp turns and speed. The cool air makes you feel like you are blasting off into space. I believe you have to be 42 or taller to get on Space Mountain, but I would wait for your child to be at least nine years old. Believe me, small children emptying their not-needed food on the middle of the ride is not needed. However, find the adrenaline side of you and give it a try! It is an experience not to be missed when in the Orlando area.
Conclusion -
Space Mountain is in reality an indoor roller coaster with the theme of blasting off into space. It may seem silly to imagine that you are going off into space like an astronaut, but it really is not silly at all. It is a fun and creative ride that lets you use your imagination. Next time you go to Disneyworld, Magic Kingdom, do not miss out on this ride. Remember, it is called Space Mountain - Blast Off To The Stars!
