Like many people, we have toyed with the idea of going without a landline in the house. That was until our children reached an age where they were old enough to use the phone to call friends, but not old enough for cell phones. So, for now we keep the basic landline and until recently we had the worst phone ever, the Uniden D1760 Cordless Phone.

What You Get
The Uniden D1760 Cordless Phone comes with one handset and a charging base. The black and silver phone stores up to 50 names on the Caller ID list and has a phone book for up to 100 names and numbers. The handset has a speaker phone and the system is expandable for up to 12 handsets. The Uniden D1760 Cordless Phone uses DECT 6.0 technology.

Our Experience
I have never liked this phone. One of the biggest annoyances I found is the delay on transmitting when you first pick up the phone. When I call home and one of the kids picks up they press the “talk” button, put the phone to their ear and say “hello”. I NEVER hear the “hello.” You have to wait about 2 seconds after pressing the “talk” button before you can talk and have the person on the other end hear you. Extremely annoying!

It also has the annoying habit of dropping calls and displaying an “out of range message” while in the same room and just a yard or two away from the base. Nowhere in our house can you be more than 30 feet from the base. While no range is given in the specs, it doesn’t seem unrealistic for a cordless phone to work within that distance. You will be sitting and talking and realize the person on the other end can’t hear you. It’s worse than a cell phone in a tunnel. When you are on the phone you can tell when someone is using the microwave because there is a lot of interference on the phone. However, when it worked, the sound clarity was excellent. We have DSL for our internet so we had two inline filters in series and never had any issues with interference from that. I had never had any trouble understanding anyone nor did anyone complain that they could not understand me.

The only thing we really liked about the phone was the ring tones; we had ours play Fur Elise. Even when using the songs instead of standard ring tones the ringer was loud enough when set to the maximum volume. However I can see the volume being too quite in many homes. The handset shape was comfortable enough in my hand, but I found the cover a bit slick in my more typical pose of wedging the receiver between my ear and shoulder.

Other than that, the Uniden D1760 Cordless Phone is a decidedly average phone. The amber backlight and display are large enough to be read easily. We had caller ID for only a short time when we first had the phone, but it came up on display at the first ring. Buttons are large, and easy identifiable. The speaker phone and mute buttons on the handset are great when I am working from home and need to use the computer and talk with a co-worker. After a year the phone was still good for at least an hour of talk time, if not more so we had no complaints from the battery. Our hand set sits on a tiny section of kitchen counter with our answering machine and really isn’t in the way but I was surprised that the phone did not include an adapter for attaching the base to the wall; you have to buy that separately.

Recently the call dropping seemed to increase. Sometimes the caller would come back but most often the length of the interruption was so long as to cause the other caller to hand up. We had simply had enough and decide to replace our Uniden D1760 Cordless Phone after about a year. The minor positives simply do not outweigh all of the negatives.
