Pros:Cool setting for a game
Cons:Not as epic as a DW game
The Bottom Line: If you like the Dynasty Warrior games, you'll like this one. It's basically the same thing.
Warriors: Legends of Troy is the latest in a series of games from Koei that mimic the Dynasty Warriors style of gameplay. This is basically the same type of game but with new graphics, and it’s a formula that has worked for many years. I found the mythology behind it kind of entertaining, but the repetitive nature of the game’s levels makes it so that the whole thing wears thin quickly.

In this game, you play through a series of battles where you have to defend Helen of Troy, take on famous generals, and even the gods themselves. It’s all straight out of The Iliad. You can play as different characters, such as Achilles, and each one has their own special weapon like a sword, spear, etc. The gameplay is basically the same with each character, though subtle differences help keep things interested. Each battle level takes place on a large map and you have optional secondary objectives to complete if you want to make the most of things. This is pure hack and slash from start to finish, and the only real tactics you need are against the bosses, but even then it’s just basic attack/defense strategy.
In addition to the single player story mode, there is an arena addition where you can fight against the various foes you encounter in the game levels. This makes for great practice by letting you square off against some of the big bads without having to deal with all the peons circling behind you. The game mechanics are the same, so basically you just get locked in a small area and have to fight wave after wave until you die.
Combat in this game is everything. You are given a third person view of the action and your character has one main weapon. You will spend most of your time hacking and slashing through crowds of enemies that die after a couple of hits. To keeps thing interesting, you’ll encounter tougher enemies along the way, and these guys actually know how to block hits and dodge your attacks. At the level’s end, you will often encounter a type of boss where you get stuck inside a ring of some kind and go one on one against them.
At the end of each level, you will amass what’s called kleos, which are like experience points. You can use these to purchase item upgrades to enhance your character. You get kleos for every kill you make, and bonus amounts for doing it with style, like backstabs. The upgrades you purchase give stuff like extra health, stronger attacks, and so on. It is crucial to have good equipment going into each mission, because the game keeps getting harder.
The graphics here are nothing really special since most of the game takes place in large outdoor areas. There is no environmental interactivity, so you’re stuck running down set pathways. Enemy soldiers look just like your own men so it’s often hard to tell who to hit, but you’ll be hitting buttons so fast it won’t matter. You can at least lock onto certain foes and this is best when going against stronger opponents. Some of the game’s cutscenes have some cool architecture shown off in them, but otherwise it’s sort of bland. The Dynasty Warrior games felt more epic and always had a lot more enemies on screen at once. Something about that large scale warfare just wasn’t captured in this game. At least this didn’t have a cheesy pseudo-metal soundtrack. The voice acting was pretty decent, though.
In the end, Warriors: Legends of Troy is a fun game if you like the Dynasty Warriors series. Parts of it can seem like an endurance test, but it still has some neat features. This is great for the casual gamer who plays every once in a while because it works best in small doses.
