After looking around for a new gym, I finally settled for the 24 Hour Fitness in Sunnyvale, CA. The first impression I had was that it was a large facility with a wide ranging selection of options there. The friendly staff greeted me and introduced me to all of their equipment, aerobics schedule and such, but my main interest was in all of the free weights as I was trying to add some muscle on my frame.
The Sales Counselor who signed me up was very professional and courteous. When I asked about the fees, he gave me some standard options and even gave me a discount when I asked what the difference between Activation fee and Processing fee was. He then informed me that the fee would be going up next month, and it was near the end of this month. Well, time was running out, and he didn't want me to miss out on a great deal, so I signed up for $49/month, which was around the summer of 2000. I can't even imagine how high the fee must be now as it apparently goes up every month.
I started working out almost everyday. One thing I liked was that the machines they have there cover all areas of your body. And I love working out late at night because there are less people there to crowd out the place. While it's great to meet new people there during hours when it's crowded, it's also great to be able to focus on working out, and that's what 24-Hour Fitness allows me to do. But hey, more people mean that it's a gym people like to go to and that it must be doing something right.
I also like to take advantage of their spa and sauna after a long workout, and for you swimmers, the pool is Olympic-sized and can accommodate many hours worth of laps. There's also about 4 rooms that can be used to play racquetball and basketball.
The gym is kept very clean, and when I eventually resigned there due to time requirements, the staff were very sad to see me go and wanted to make sure that the home gym I told them I was going to build was enough to meet my exercise needs.
