| impydykiechick's Full Review: 24 Hour Fitness |
I just moved to Kansas City a month ago and needed to find a gym here. I noticed there was a 24-Hour Fitness Sport just down the street. I called to inquire about prices & was asked to come down to take a tour. I didn't mind this so much because I didn't live that far away. During the tour, I was told about all of their various programs & was shown the facility, which featured treadmills, stair masters, stair climbers, ellipticals, cross-trainers, stationary bikes in way of cardio equipment, and a variety of different weight machines. Also, they had a nice locker room, a pool room w/ a heated swimming pool, jacuzi, and saunas. They also had a shop where you could buy activewear, supplements, and various fitness gear.
Now...onto the sales pitch. It seemed the longer I held out & said that I wanted to do some comparison shopping, the lower my sales guy went. Eventually he waived one of the two starting fees & went down to a $20 per month fee. I thought this was pretty decent. Up front, I had to pay the startup fee & 2 months fee. To be honest, it all did happen pretty fast, but @ the moment I felt like it was a good investment. The only bad things about the deal I got was that I can't use my membership pass @ any other location, & I can only work out 4 days a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, & Sundays).
Later on the day I signed up I went to work out. I purposely went around 5:30pm to see what it was like during a peak time. It was busy, but I was immedately able to use and elliptical & stair master for a warm-up. I did have to wait occasionally for the machines. However, I'm not too picky about the order I use the machines as long as they're in the same muscle group. So say if one leg machine was in use, I'd use a different one until the one I wanted was free or until I finished my reps, whichever came first.
I was also impressed with their locker room. It was plenty spacious w/ lots of lockers and bench space. Their bathroom stalls were in a separate room as were their shower stalls. The shower stalls are also seperated which I REALLY like.
One final aspect I liked was their diversity of patrons. There were teenyboppers, bodybuilders, grandmas, noticeably overweight people, and everyone in between. I'm a little bit chunky & I did not feel out of place at all.
My main complaint about the Shawnee facility is that some of the weight equipment is hard to figure out on your own. It's best to have an instructor take you around & properly show you how to use everything.
