| theeyeguy's Full Review: 24 Hour Fitness |
After some bad experiences with some other clubs I tried "24Hr. Fitness. I've been a member now for 6+ years, but only go sporadically these days. We have a family membership and my wife and daughter still go regularly. We've used the facilities at about six or seven different close-by locations (as well as several out of area, when travelling).
The problem with reviews of "24Hr. Fitness" is that they have over 400 clubs and most reviewers can only give their experience with probably 1 or 2 locations. I've had good and not so good experiences at the various clubs. The advantage of an all-club membership is you can find a nearby club that suits you and go there regularly (which is what we did) and also use out of area clubs if you travel.
We pay $19/month for the entire family for an all-club "sport" membership (good at all clubs except for the few hyper-fancy "sporting" clubs). We did pay enrollment fees when we joined, it's too long ago to recall the exact amount, but they weren't excessive.
If you're not into the 'meat market' thing avoid the 5pm to 8pm after work social crowd. But if you want to meet others while you work out(and fight the crowd), it's the perfect time for you. The clubs are open long hours (most, but not all, are open 24 hrs.), so there's time enough for every type of member to find what they're looking for.
The newer custom-built clubs are beautiful. The older clubs and the clubs they get by buying out competitors are often far less than what you'd want. But they do seem to try to bring them up to the best possible standards within the limits of the existing configuration.
My main point is that with so many clubs in most major markets you're likely to find what you're looking for at a fair price.
P.S.: You can get the price down quite a lot if your willing to: 1)haggle, 2)come back more than once, and 3)ask to talk to the manager of the club. Don't be shy. It's unfortunate that they work that way, but like it or not that's the reality of "24Hr. Fitness", and if you can get past it, I think you'll be pleased.
