Pros: Decent clubs.
Cons: Not honest. Corporate policy to ignore and stonewall complaints.
The Bottom Line: Decent clubs, but not honest and depenable management.

| pantangele's Full Review: 24 Hour Fitness |
It's been about three years, but I'll never forget. I worked out at the Hollywood, CA 24 Hour Fitness. I had my lock cut in the locker room and lost my wallet, expensive watch, IPod, cash, car keys, etc. Because I had my ID in my wallet and business cards, I had to change my locks at my home, office and on my car. That would have been bad, but here's where I was wronged:
1) Unbeknownst to me, the club had offered 100 free memberships for the week through a hip hop channel. No value judgments, but if you let 100 random people in for free without any preconditions or other means of evaluating who they are, it's not smart.
2) When I found my locker was raided and reported it, the guy behind the counter told me that there had been a rash of lockers raided that month. The club knew that locks were being cut and yet they did absolutely nothing to warn the membership.
I was really, really mad. I had to have a friend come and pick me up and drive me home in my sweat soaked workout clothes and then had to wait hours for neighbors to come home so I could get my spare house key.
I took this up with the upper management of 24 Hour Fitness. I asked very nicely for the club to warn its membership since they knew of a problem that affected them. They refused. I thought seriously about litigation after asking for token restitution.
I was met by a stone wall. The club was more afraid of liability than the members. I fought like a rabid animal for warnings to be posted, but I was told that the club had a formal policy of accepting no responsibility for lost or stolen items, even though they knew the problem was continuing. I spoke with the top attorney for the club and while I was very nice and asked only for a few months free membership out of principle, he was a real jerk. He blamed me and said I should have kept valuables in my car. My present club in Texas actually tells me NOT to put valuables in my car, but to take them inside.
Overall, it shocked and dismayed me that the club wouldn't warn its guests (and hadn't warned me) of a rash of thefts. They went out of their way to ignore me and simply wouldn't entertain any pleas or calls for action. Shameful.
Although the State of California had precedent with parking garages that knew of theft and were found responsible for loss, it wasn't worth my time to pursue.
But I can warn you. If you have a problem with that chain, they will not do the right thing.
