| Podie1956's Full Review: Bally Total Fitness |
Like a fool, I ignored all the bad things I'd heard about Bally Total Fitness Centers and walked into the one near work when I saw the 2 For 1 sign posted. Immediately, the salesperson told me the sign was wrong, that the 2 For 1 sale had ended the day before. I told her she had to honor it as it was posted. After endless phone calls with this manager and that manager (probably all an act), she told me she would honor it for me and then remove the sign. (It was still posted two weeks later.)
I bought a 2 For 1 membership for my husband and me with $125 down and 36 months of payments. I verified (in front of her) that the contract included the 72-Hour Right of Refusal in case my husband didn't like it.
My husband took one look at our local Bally and said forget it. I tried to cancel the membership in writing at the club I joined and they refused to take it, saying I had to mail it in (even though the contract stated I could walk it in).
I mailed the cancellation to Bally in Maryland (certified mail, return receipt) before 48 hours were up. I stated that I was exercising my 72 Hour Right of Refusal and wanted my down payment back. I received the return receipt showing they had received the cancellation, but they still claimed I never properly cancelled the membership.
To make a long story short, two years later, I was never refunded any money, was hounded by Bally and their collection agency for 18 months, filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, Florida Attorney General, and the Better Business Bureau, and all I have to show for my experience is $125 less in my pocket and a bad mark on my credit report. STAY AWAY FROM BALLY TOTAL FITNESS!!!!
