Pros: Good variety of exercise machines, there are classes.
Cons: Deceptive practices, horrible lying managers, bad customer service, rude employees, bad cancellation policy (auto renewal?)
The Bottom Line: Save your money and go buy a total gym or something like that.
You'll end up spending just as much if you get sucked into signing up for Golds.

| sonic98624's Full Review: Gold's Gym |
It would be a nice place if I could have actually used it. I was forced to pay even though I couldn't use it.
The managers at the Gold's Gym in Gaithersburg MD will lie to your face to get you to join and sign a contract. They'll tell you anything to convince you that signing up for Gold's Gym is the best decision you'll ever make.
I signed up for a 12 month contract this past Feb and the manager said to me that I could cancel my membership when I moved back to college in Baltimore which is out of the stipulated 20 mile radius. He said that I would be able to show a school campus housing contract as proof of my move since the school's residential services do not charge utilities rather they simply charge you a flat rate by semester. When I went back a few months later to cancel my contract he acted like he never told me that and says the only 2 things they'd accept is a newly issued state id or a utility bill.
I have moved out of the 20 mile radius and I have been trying to terminate my contract for months. How am I supposed to get a new state id when I haven't moved out of the state? I haven't used their facilities for months and yet I am stuck with paying their bills every month.
Reading other reviews here, I'm not the only one who got shafted by Gold's Gym's cancellation policies. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep charging me when and if I ever do succeed in getting my membership canceled.
Stay away from Golds Gym you're much better off buying your own equipment,it'll save you money in the long run.
2/28/06 UPDATE
I reached the end of my 12 month contract which I ended up having to pay to the end even though I haven't used their facilities since last May or so. According to the contract, when you reach the end of your 12 month period you have to send a written notice to your Gold's Gym to notify them that you don't want them to automatically renew your membership on a month-to-month basis as it would normally do. So I wrote a letter and actually hand delivered it to the front desk at the Gold's Gym. I had two copies with a signature line at the bottom acknowledging receipt of the letter. Not only was the person working at the front desk at the time very rude, he started using profanity at me and raising his voice. He started to complain about how he got "conned" into working on his day off and how he wasn't supposed to be there. How is that my problem? I'm the customer here. Not only do their managers lie, their employees are terrible too.
Pros
2/28/06 UPDATE
Okay I'm updating this part because some reviewers didn't like the one sided aspect of my review.
They had a good variety of machines and plenty of free weights to use. Plenty of treadmills and exercise machines. There was an aerobics room, a seperate exercise bikes room and the locker rooms were decent. They also used to lend out towels during your workout but as I understand it they no longer do that so thats not really a pro I suppose. There were no swimming pools, just two general areas. One area for the machines and one for the free weights.
Cons
2/28/06 UPDATE
Okay this update is going to clear up why I rated Gold's Gym so low. It wasn't because the facilities were poor because they were adequate for the amount they charged but the problem that I have is that I was deceived into believing that I would be able to terminate my contract as it so stipulates on the contract that if I were to move out of the 20 mile radius of the gym that I would be able to terminate the contract with a 30 day written notice. And the manager himself said that a school housing contract would be sufficient. However when I returned several months later they would not allow me to do anything saying that I could only present them with a newly issued state ID or a utility bill. And since I didn't move out of state nor does the university charge utilities I was unable to provide them with either of these. And most recently when I returned to deliver the required written notice to inform them I would not be renewing my contract on a month to month basis the employee at the desk was rude and used excessive profanity. This type of behavior and that of the deceptive management and the overall unwillingness of the company to help its customers is why I gave this company a very low rating, not its facilities.
