I was a member of Australian Body Works in the Atlanta area before L.A. Fitness bought them out. What was a great chain went straight to pot.
L.A. Fitness came in and rearranged the gym equipment for seemingly no legitimate reason at all. They also had no concern for modesty - the old owners took into consideration things like if you're wearing shorts, you probably don't want to be doing the abductor machine facing the rest of the room, don't want to be doing donkey-kicks with your butt to the world, and so on.
The gym became dirty - from the floors to the locker rooms. Equipment wasn't put away.
L.A. Fitness staff also seemed indifferent and unfriendly. ABW had such a great personal touch. When you'd check in, they'd welcome you by name (ok, even if they had to read it off your check-in tag), and even had a rule that if they didn't welcome you by name, you'd get a free pair of headphones. With L.A. Fitness you're lucky if you even get a glance from whoever is behind the desk. Of course, you'll get their full attention and charm if you're interested in joining.
The gym quickly became crowded. The rates went up. L.A. Fitness also did away with things like single-month purchases of tanning or other memberships.
Really the only thing that improved when L.A. Fitness purchased the gym is the hours improved - they were open an hour later during the week.
I left soon after L.A. Fitness purchased my independent chain. I wrote the company a letter describing these reasons why I was canceling my membership. Of course, I never received any kind of reply from them.
