| namayan's Full Review: Atkins Diet |
The popular low-carb/high-protein diet has been and continues to be popular among many health conscious people. With the many testimonials and studies to support the effectiveness of the Atkins Diet in losing weight one needs to ask him or herself what kind of weight is being lost? When I hear people say that they want to lose weight, what they should be saying is that they want to lose bodyfat.
Many health/nutrition experts agree that when going on a low-carb/high-protein diet weight will definitely be lost. However, this weight loss is due to a decrease in fat AND muscle. "So what's the big deal? Weight is weight, as long as I see that number on the scale go down every morning I'm happy!" Don't get too excited Mrs. Jones, because what ultimately happens when you lose muscle is a decrease in resting metabolism. Now before I get into metabolism I want to point out that the ultimate goal for the average individual is to have a high metabolism and to have the greatest amount of muscle relative to bodyfat.
Now metabolism is basically how your body processes food into usable energy for all cells in the body, most especially muscle cells. When we put on more muscle, our metabolism increases. With me so far? Muscle is more metabolically active than fat. Fat just sits there all day and all night.
Having a slow metabolism essentially means that whenever we decide to eat, our body has a more difficult time to transform that food into usable energy. So guess what happens to all the extra calories? It gets converted to fat! Combine that with a lack of physical inactivity and you'll end up ballooning up to when you first started the diet because all those excess calories that you ate were not utilized by your slow metabolism.
To that end, the best way to lose FAT is to increase the metabolism as high as possible. Try to do this the natural way without any "fat-loss" pills. Increase the muscle via weight training, and eat at least a gram of protein per pound of lean body weight NOT total weight, so it behooves you to get your bodyfat percentage checked by a professional in order to determine your lean body weight and fat body weight. As far as frequency of meals are concerned, try to eat small meals 5-6 times a day combining carbohydrates and protein.
