| discotish's Full Review: Atkins Diet |
In today's society, where the population of overweight people is steadliy on the rise, people are looking for a quick fix. Plain and simple. Everyone knows what it takes to lose weight, Balanced nutrition and exercise. We all know that, yet, every year more and more of these so called "miracle diets" appear on the market, and more and more people are looking to take the easy way out. There are some verifiable weight loss programs such at Weight Watchers that do teach proper eating habits and stress exercise, but most add it as an after thought.
I tried the Atkins diet myself. Yes, I was a sucker for all the hype I saw on television. I had 50 lbs to lose and I know I'm a carbo junkie. Self admitted "My name is Stephanie and i'm a carb addict...". Just imagine a diet plan where you can eat steak and eggs, cheese and chicken, BACON...all the good stuff, and lose weight. Atkins sounded like a dream plan. In a way it made sense, make your body think it was starving and then it'd burn energy using the stored fat in your body.
One bad thing about this diet is the utter lack of variation. I was so freaking sick and tried of eggs that I was ready to scream. Sure there are different recipes to make meals, but you're still using the same foods. Very monotonus.
Also, I really don't think that enough research has gone into studing the long term effects of increased intake of high fat/cholesterol foods such as butter, eggs, cheese, beef, and pork that are recommended. Everyone from the American Heart Association to Joe Blow on the street knows that foods high in fat are bad for you.
This pales in comparison to the Ketosis part of the diet. Basicly, through the lack of carbohydrates, you are starving yourself. Now this can't be healthy! All it seems to do is totally screw with your system , while at the same time, not teaching proper nutrition. The long term effects of these eating habits could be devestating.
We need to look beyond the quick fix and look at the real reasons for being overweight. For some it's glandular, others may have emotional stresses causing them to overeat. All the causes need to be looked at and evaluated, and people need to see that eating and living healthy is a learned response. Not something that can be learned overnight.
