My mother gave me this book and put me on this diet my junior year of high school. I kept up the 2-week starter program for one week. All of high school seems to have passed in a meaningless blur, but that single week is permanently burned into my brain.
Okay, it did work. I lost 10 pounds in a week, which was fantastic for me. The problem was that I was walking around in a semi-dazed state for that week. I was almost walking into walls, had a very light-headed detached sort of sensation, and failed the first and only test of my educational career. Not to mention that I was starving.
Okay, Atkins says that if you're hungry you're doing it wrong, because you're allowed to eat however much you want as long as it's just fat or protein. The problem here is that it's not physically possible to eat that much!! At dinner with my family one night, I ate up all my salmon, the two pieces of extra salmon that had been cooked just in case, my mom's salmon and half of my sister's salmon. Then my gaze started wandering over to my father's salmon, he was just staring at me like I'd sprouted a second head which wanted to eat his dinner. (As point of reference, my mom and sister usually split a single piece of salmon for dinner. My dad eats one. In that dinner I managed to consume four and a half servings. I was still hungry. It's like that Very Hungry Caterpillar book.). See? It's socially unacceptable to eat enough to be full on the Atkins diet. I had to stop eating the salmon, not because I was full, but because I was embarrassed because everyone was staring at me as though I were insane.
I managed to keep the weight off after I stopped (you have never seen someone as thrilled to be eating a piece of bread as I was the day that diet stopped) by reverting to my previous habits of not eating five servings of dinner. The weight came back about a month later during finals when I was trapped at my desk studying and snacking all day.
Okay, so it's a good diet for getting rid of a lot of weight in a tiny amount of time. This diet is NOT designed for people who just want to polish off a few pounds. The Atkins diet is basically just for morbidly obese people who need to get weight off quickly however possible. Just don't operate heavy or complex machinery, try to speak coherently, or concentrate on something important while under the influence of the Atkins' diet.
