| brad_cantrill's Full Review: Atkins Diet |
It would be silly of me to suggest that I'm overweight. In fact, I'm rather fortunate in the fact that my weight tends to stay between 185 and 195 pounds consistently. So why might you ask do I feel compelled to to occasionally go on a diet? Well, perhaps the best answer I can give is that ten extra pounds on my body frame feels like a lot. If I weigh close to 200, then I feel sluggish and unhealthy. Also, I swear that every single one of those pounds resides in my belly. Therefore, rather than to appear pregnant, I go threw two-week cycles of the Atkin's diet.
What is the Atkin's diet
Well, it's a diet designed specifically to burn up fat. It's quite effective, but food choices on this diet are unusual. I've used the Atkin's diet three times and each time I lose between 8 to 12 pounds. It's perfect for burning off extra pounds so long as you stick by the restrictions.
The diet scientifically makes sense. The objective is to lower your carbohydrate level to a low enough amount that the body will be forced to burn fat. When the body converts food into energy it burns fuel in the following order: carbohydrates, fats, proteins. Thus, if you have no or very little carbohydrates in your system your body will be forced to burn fat. It's inevitable, but it takes discipline.
What can you eat on the Atkin's diet
If your a caveman than this diet will appeal to you because first and foremost on this diet is protein. And that means meat-lot's of meat. Just invest in 20 lbs of hamburger, b/c that's going to be your dinner for the next two weeks. In addition, eggs, beans, cheese, fish, chicken, and pork should be mainstays of your diet.
Be very wary of eating vegetable. Green vegetables are generally ok b/c they are low in carbohydrates, but do not eat potatoes, corn, squash, any fruit etc.... Always check the carbohydrate count before you consume vegetables. Most people have enough sense not to eat bread, but it's eating too many vegetables that often causes people to ruin the diet.
Fats and grease can be okay so long as the carbohydrate count is low. Remember that the key to this diet is eliminating your carbohydrate intake not your fat intake. It's okay to eat stuff like Ribeye, b/c you will burn up these calories quickly.
Remember to avoid cokes, coffee, and tea. These are really bad for you and will raise your carbohydrate count quickly or mess up your bodies ability to burn fat. If you must drink something besides water than consider a light beer. Surprisingly, a light beer only contains 5 gms of carbohydrates in a 12 ounce can. In other words, you could drink 8 light beers to equal one coke.
The key to this diet is to keep your carbohydrate intake under 20 grams per day. Be very careful how you allocate these grams. Simple products like salad dressing can put you over the edge for the day. If your serious about taking on this diet, I suggest you pick up a paper back copy of Dr. Atkin's book. It retails for about $6.00 and gives a detailed guide of what is appropriate to eat.
How will you feel on this diet?
I'm not going to lie to you the first 3 days are going to be tough. If your like me and love bread then you will go through a withdrawl period. It will make you irritable and hungry. It kind of feels like a gnawing sensation in your belly. Take heart though because it will pass. Then you will enter the second phase of this diet called Kerotosis. Then you will feel remarkable and full of vigor. Kerotosis is perhaps the greatest natural high I've ever had. The desire to eat will dramatically decrease and you will be well on your way to completing the cycle.
Some final thoughts
Keep in mind that for most people the Atkin's diet is an ongoing process. The idea is you are retraining your body to burn food. After the two weeks you are suppossed to gradually reintroduce carbohydrates back into your diet. A prolonged absence of carbohydrates from your system is unhealthy, but the key is to eat a manageable amount each day so you lose weight. Each person's body chemistry is different so levels will corrospondingly be different. Just be sensible about dieting. Don't obsess about keeping the weight off and don't stay on the period for too long a time. Be smart and dedicated and the weight will melt away like butter.
